Timing was a huge part of it. Scott needs to get trapped in the quantum realm in order for the plan to work. That means the snap has to happen during the test we see at the end of Antman and the Wasp. Which means Strange has to ensure that Thanos wins precisely during that 5 second window, no sooner or later. The entire fight on Titan is a giant stalling measure to ensure that the snap occurs at exactly the right moment.

I mean it's never directly stated, but without Scott getting trapped in the quantum realm no one would ever figure out that you could use it to time travel.

Think about it, aside from Scott all the people who even know the quantum realm exists gets dusted, and Scott doesn't know enough about the quantum realm or Pym Particles to figure it out on his own if he doesn't experience it firsthand. Scott's van was impounded in a random building somewhere completely untouched so clearly no one had realized that it was carrying Hank Pym's tech, so it's unlikely that anyone else was continuing Pym's work either. If the snap hadn't happened within the small window where Scott was in the quantum realm that day the whole plot would have never been possible.

I'd argue the setup to the Avengers theme helped a lot too, it helped the heroes' return feel like something straight from LotR.

I think the idea is more that Sam is more the right man to be Captain America in the modern age.
He'll still be Falcon, but he'll also carry the mantle of being the symbol of American morality for the modern age in a way that Steve struggled with given how much more gray the modern political landscape is to him

Too bad the earlier MCU movies didn't really stick to a particular theme for the characters. The only ones which had a recurring theme were A1/IW/EG, GOTG1/2 and Ant-Man/AM&TW.

Even the favorable reviews admit it's flawed and give it grace for the genre. I thought Brie did a fine job, but the film stunk. No two ways about it.

I don't really mind it. Regardless of them acting all stuck-up, Scott still got some great character moments. He was also the one who came up with the plan to defeat Thanos in the first place. And by taking everyone's contempt in stride, he showed he was the bigger man (no pun intended).
