Angel, Havok and Colossus tend to be more popular as husbandos for gay readers, but Iceman was the one they thought they had a realistic chance of getting Marvel to "give" them, so they focused on him. He wasn't half of a long-running and popular couple, and they did a lot of deliberate misreading of scenes with him to claim as 'evidence'.

The real question is, why isn't Bobby canonically bisexual instead? It would make a whole lot more sense and be way less insulting to fans of the canon and the character, as well as a rare exposure win for real bisexuals. Also, Angel was into men in 1602, although I don't remember if they mentioned whether he was gay or bisexual.

There's this implicit idea that bisexuals aren't "gay enough" to count, it's really weird. I remember, in the early days of Orange is the New Black, a lot of fans hated Piper for marrying a man instead of a woman.

It's all about teams. Bisexuals are seen as inherently untrustworthy-you're letting down the SIDE, you see.

Also Bendis knew it'd stick. It's that simple, he wanted a big character change that no one would dare retcon. The whole thing was so cynical you could make a british political drama about it.

I remember when I had just come out, and it was probably an old tease then, but I heard people say "bi now, gay later" a lot. I know now as a man in my thirties that it's a lot more complicated than just that I STRONGLY favor the company of men, but it would have been a lot less confusing and terrifying if there hadn't been people on "both sides" who felt let down or betrayed or something until I just started saying that I was gay when asked so they'd leave me alone (about that anyways; didn't stop people calling me a fag though).
I wonder if Bobby is actually bisexual and Jean just did what everyone around me did when I came out? That would be a fun twist to the story.

As much as you might hate it, Bobby was the safe choice since you can easily make him a twink and Bendis hated him for making moves on Kitty

Not that I buy the argument but Bobby does have more of a history of pursuing unavailable women or getting involved in relationships that are doomed from the get go. Even though Warren's a slut, the actual relationships he gets into are generally more stable.
