A lot of stuff set up in the Silver Age that never got followed up (and it's not really 'a lot') happened because creators left books (a good example of this is Kirby's New Gods stuff) or it happened because books got cut short for not selling well (again, happened to Kirby several times). Something like the Fantastic Four, it's doubtful it really happened other than a creator mistake or editors not allowing something for some absurd reason (e.g. a relationship or some such).
