Americans seem to misunderstand Dragon Ball in general. Aside from typically not being versed in the literature and folklore the series partially riffing on, they also seem to take it way more seriously than intended.

It starts off being about a monkey boy who thinks girls are neutered men and ends with him fighting a pink blob who turns people into candy. It's mainly meant to be funny and cool, what little is meant to be taken seriously is just there to keep the tension but it's not the focus.

And also... Do you really think an American publisher would be fine with constant panty and motorboating jokes?
