Honestly, I'm more than glad that they weren't included in these epilogues. Carapacians will remain as the best thing that ever came from Homestuck, which actually says a lot more about the comic than it would seem at first.

Dirkbot who is infecting all of canon by forcing shards of himself into everyone has escaped the blackhole (I think) with Rosebot (who is now essentially his puppet) and Terezi (who has Meat!John captchaloged in her wallet). He is doing this in order to start a new Sburb session, for some nefarious purpose.

Meanwhile, Calliope is waiting for the corpse of LE to sink far enough through the event horizon that she can bond with it and become her own ultimate self in order to stop Dirk, along with Jade from the gameover timeline, Davebot (thanks Obama), Aradia and Sollux. Calliope is also using Meat!Jade to point Kanaya, Roxy, Dave, and Karkat from the meat timeline to also get out of the blackhole to chase after Dirk

It's a paralell to how Hussie is no longer the driving force of Homestuck and other, lesser talents control it now.

Someone who is split apart on a metaphysical level and is actively spiderweb injecting himself into other people, either by taking over their concious or by actually fusing with them.
But he's written in such a way that has no entertainment value. You don't root against him or for him. He isn't engaging as a character. Plus he is rooted into the already far too abundant meta-narrative shitfest of Hussie's writing style.

As a reader, enduring all the meta bullshit of homestuck only to get one last dose of "lol I troll u reader" through Dirk's monologuing only makes me roll my eyes.

The part that was retconned wasn't even good, but neither was what came after.

People say it's the page where troll romance info started getting dropped, or when Hivebent in general started because it moved the primary focus away from the 4 main kids towards a bunch of extraneous characters with only dubious influence on the main 4, but I think even that was still fine. It was a huge diversion, like putting down The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers to instead read through The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, but it does add a lot of context. The part where Homestuck as a narrative starts to show signs of having no hope of a good conclusion starts in Act 5 part 2.

It's where Gamzee kills Equius and Nepeta. The scene itself is tragic and decently constructed, but the problem is that it essentially subverts Equius' building character arc. It wasn't much, in the previous walk-about flash, it was mostly him telling Nepeta that he had resolved to stop Gamzee, even if it meant defying the hemospectrum he held in such high regard. It's not much, but it gives his character something to do, especially considering how much time gets devoted to him. It's fine to kill off a character as a twist as long as it serves a purpose, like if Equius' tragic death motivated Nepeta to come out of her shell or something. But no, Nepeta just dies almost right after. It doesn't really lead to anything either, since it basically just serves to make a quick joke at Equius' expense then erase the two characters from the narrative. It's subversive tragedy for it's own sake, and would set the precedent for a lot of where Act 6 failed. Wanna know how Terezi deals with killing Vriska and her feelings for Karkat/Dave? Lol, too bad, she becomes a juggalette and never confronts any of it then dies. Wanna know John deals with Vriska's heel-turn/death after basically developing a crush on her? Lol he doesn't care about her actually. From there it feels like Hussie started writing a sequel before the original work was even finished.

There are parts in Act 6 that work, and there's potential in a lot of the ideas, but none of them should have even been started before the original plot line was resolved. Hussie knew his audience wanted closure, they wanted character arcs to finish, but for whatever reason Hussie decided to troll his audience and intentionally wrote the opposite of what most people were expecting. But that means that a lot of what happens ends up feeling wildly out of character or anti-climactic. Beyond that, the comic was a structural nightmare at this point. So many concluding points for the original arcs of Homestuck happened either at the same time as the conclusions for Act 6 characters or even after. It makes it all feel rushed, despite Act 6 being long as fuck.

Overall, it's a case where the author decided to troll the audience, but in the end only succeeded in killing a great comic.

Right, because you can still have moments that are fine on their own, but because the structure is so fucked the narrative can't be satisfying or provide adequate catharsis on the whole. In something heavily character focused like Homestuck, character arcs are how you string all the individual moments together to create a story that is greater than the sum of it's parts.

The funny thing about the Epilogue is that it actually could be a return to form just because it fixes the overall structure of the story, taking it from a schizophrenic back and forth between new and established characters, it just chronicles an A story and a B story for an established set of characters. As odd as it sounds, if you're willing to separate the Epilogue from Homestuck and just take these characters as they are, then it all works pretty well.

Parring down a cast of characters can work as long as it does something for the story, but like you said, Hussie hated them and made jokes out of their characters. That might've been a slight blotch in an otherwise spotless story since a lot of the trolls were ancillary, but the attitude slowly crept into basically every other aspect of the comic.

I dunno if Act 1-4 Homestuck can be called child friendly, because there's still a lot of innuendo and swearing, but it's definitely been shifted on purpose. The later parts of Act 5 Part 2 felt like a shift from adventure to horror, and a lot of act 6 felt like a Mexican soap opera. I totally get why people say Acts 1-4 were the best though, because a genre shift away from Hero's Journey adventure definitely occurs in Act 5, and it's 100% on purpose. Whether or not that's a good thing is up for debate though. Tavros' death at Vriska's hands is the catalyst for this though, and that's why I always liked that death. It's almost a metaphor for the comic itself doing away with the boyish heroics in favor of something else. It's just too bad the "something else" didn't pan out.

Katnep is the single most important idea of the Homestuckverse to me. It's literally all I care about in this shitty comic. It's representitive of Nepeta at her happiest, and Karkat... well fuck him. He doesn't know what he wants.

Killing a side-character or two to raise the steaks and build tension is definitely a valid writing move, as it can be a tragic death. Equius' death was a joke, but Nepeta's was definitely tragic. IIRC she even had a line about telling Karkat her feelings the next time she saw him. That's a classic death flag as someone who's seen a lot of cheesy anime/read a lot of cheesy VNs. It can also be useful tool to define an antagonist or just throw people off. If even a developed character can die, then anyone's fair game right? Game of Thrones does this to varying degrees of success, so it can work.

This, however, fundamentally assumes the author wants to make a good story. Truthfully, I think something inside of Hussie broke somewhere along the line and he essentially became a subversive writer for the sole purpose of trying to piss off his audience.

There's another way in which the scene fails that might be most obvious to an Yea Forumsie. That is what the main goal of the scene should have in theory been, to sell Gamzee as a monster heel. Letting strong opponents get torn apart by the rising heel to sell him as someone who will fuck up Mr. Face and take his belt without Mercy is basic wres writing, but this particular scene fails in 3 ways to achieve this.

Long story short, he doesn't fight back. Not only is this bad for his character arc, but also for his opponents. How is Gamzee meant to look strong if the strong guy he's being fed lays down for the 3 willingly?
>The case of Nepeta
This is more about the lead up to the match than the match itself. The audience doesn't treat Nepeta as a strong fighter despite her supposedly being one, and this is mostly on Hussie using her as the cute fluff character with her physical achievements being downplayed when they're even shown at all. And Gamzee squashing her so thoroughly doesn't help in that image of her. The audience is more likely to see it as a big clown beating up a defenseless little girl than as a strong opponent being badly outmatched.
>The case of Gamzee himself
So, Gamzee (theoretically) has built up fear in the audience's perception and a shitload of heel heat to go with it. What does he do with it, exactly? You'd expect him to go on to be a major ongoing threat, or at least the main enforcer for the real big bad. In reality, not so much. A little bit of the shoosh-pap and he ends up just kinda chilling with the crew not really doing much, other than the occasional breif reminder that Hey, you're supposed to be scared of this guy. Even when he does serve as a henchman he's just kinda there. This is probably the biggest issue with the scene, since if Gamzee went on to be the monster heel it seemed like he was gonna be, then the deaths of the meowrails would have at least had some meaning for his story, but as it stands? None.

I slightly disagree with your point about Nepeta, it was definitely intended to make Gamzee seem like a horrible monster killing a defenseless little girl. Even before this, Gamzee was heavily alluded to be highly dangerous and powerful. Nepeta was strong, but Gamzee did the most damage to the Black King, with the possible exception of Vriska but it's unknowable because she dealt the killing blow. So it's essentially no contest. But ironically that's even worse, because like you said it builds up the Heel to be this horrible monster and enforcer for the bad guy. But again like you said, then the Face never really confronts him and then he basically doesn't do anything afterwards.

Interesting perspective though. Definitely never thought about it in wrestling terms.

Everything is awful, and will continue to be awful. The moment you stop assuming anything other than the worst possible thing will happen to Homestuck, the happier you will be.

For me, it was a series of blows. Openbound was the first hit (I actually liked Act 6 before this point), then Ministrife, then Trickster Mode was a big hit, then the retcon stuff starts, then the pauses start, and by the time the Gigapause ends it just isn't the same, despite Caliborn and Game Over trying to keep it alive. Vriska coming back was the final nail in the coffin (not that that stopped more nails from being added with a rapid-fire nailgun).

But to answer as a single point, I lost my confidence in Hussie at Trickster Mode.

The decline started the moment Act 5.1 started, but it was a slow decline. I think the moment it actually died though, would have had to have been the start of Act 6. The only real hope Homestuck had was to ride it's momentum to the finish line, but instead it put a halt on everything and started over with a new cast, a new cast that was fucking awful. There was no way out from there, it was dead.

Davesprite's entire arc was a mirror of Dave's, but instead of "I;m not a hero" it was "I'm not the real Dave", and that was exactly the reason why he broke up with Jade. And then Hussie decided to fix Davesprite's problems by giving him the magical solution to everything, while also ruining his character.

Sorry, it wasn't his arc but rather the issue his arc revolved around. He needed to overcome his issue of thinking he wasn't the real Dave. Also he didn't kill LE. Dave stabbed LE with the sword, weakening him, and Davepeta sent him into the black hole. Alt Calliope is the one who killed LE.
