For all Paulo knew, Augustus was only the guy who was grooming Daisy for a while and then attempted to rape her. And this lack of knowledge on his part is only because of, in part, Daisy, but more importantly because of Lucy, who knows really well that Gus isn't just that, but keeps gatekeeping her supposed friends from him.

A pretty good bonus chapter in the sense that it influences how a reader will see other parts of the comic rather than just being some fluff.

Megan has outright stated her opposition to worldbuilding in the past.

Lucy's doing the same shit with her mom that she's doing with anyone else who tries to dig into her issues with Mike. She'll change the subject and put the other person on the defensive, regardless of if they're making a good point or not.
The more hurtful the subject change, the more effective it is, so she doesn't hold back.

The only improvement could come from Taeshi embracing the cringy teenager inside her that made this comic and giving the audience what they want, which is straight up teenage drama.
the old comic had so much more EMOTION, they felt like teenagers being dramatic, now that Taeshi and luggage lad are trying their best to repress that memory and wipe it from the proverbial and literal records the comic has also mellowed the fuck out and lost it's charm.
Basically in an attempt to hide their cringy teenage years Taeshi threw the baby out with the bathwater and killed all the emotional teenage drama this comic did well.

You'd have to pick the current corpse clean of the few gold nuggets there is and then go back to pre-chibishit and continue on like everything after that never happened.

I mostly did it to provide concrete info for discussion. How much time passes between certain events can be distorted for a reader given how drawn-out some storyline are, especially in terms of real time. "December" to Lucy's suicide attempt is only about two weeks for example.

Lucy locks herself in her room and stops going to school.

Lucy's family reluctantly decide to send her away to her aunt's for still unexplained reasons.

After Sue's dumb play, Mike offers conditional reconciliation with Lucy.

B/c she's getting sent away and can't take advantage of Mike's offer Lucy decides to kill herself.

Lucy is away from Roseville for about 9 months. Part of this time is spent in a "psych ward".

Lucy returns. She now hates Mike because he was mean to her but ALSO hates her friends because Mike told her they don't care about her and ALSO hates her family worrying about her after her suicide attempt. She says she just wants to get away from everyone but she winds up Mike every chance she gets and is evasive with her friends, telling lies and refusing to talk about anything serious but also not actually ditching them or appreciating their care for her.

Honestly the common thread here is Lucy is a shit who makes bad decisions. She could dearly stand to have some humility instead of spending all her energy hating others and trying to get rid of them as if he would fix her messed-up life.

Thats because there is no point in Making Sandy evil as She isnt even a full fleshed character herself, she just served as that invisible wall of drama that keeps Lucy and Myke from fucking eachother’s brains out.
The moment Taeshi doesnt need her anymore she will just cuck Mike over text and be gone forever, like she never existed.
She probably wont even make an appearence again, and if she does it will be to dump Myke or raise more drama between him and Lucy.

Pic-related would've sufficed at some point but we're well beyond that at this point. I don't know how many layers bitch she has her "true self" buried under at this point but if actions speak louder than words, then there's practically no difference anymore.

If the parallelism keeps going she's going to have her realization about how important Mike was to her at roughly the time Mike gives in completely to loneliness-induced depression, much like happened the other way around at the play. Augustus is demonstrably pretty bad at handling Lucy when she breaks down emotionally, and eventually she's going to want to stop being snarky for five seconds and think back to how tender Mike used to be much like Mike had his flashback of Lucy comforting him.

Whether or not it's this or just Mike crawling back to her after Sandy dumps him depends pretty heavily on whether Taeshi is aware of how manipulative and cruel Lucy is being, and I really can't be sure about that at this point.

Lucy is the first real challenge she's seemed to have as a parent. Sam is a bit of a cold fish and seems to be very respectful and Jordan is a pushover.

Yah yeah, I know she checks all the MILF-quotas for Yea Forums and acts like a typical 50s housewife or what you assume "all moms are like" (which somehow makes her worse..?? she is a cardboard cutout). But she is negligent and emotionally retarded.

Calling her child out for not being 'normal', calling out her child for not making new friends or adjusting well, putting her back in her old school and ignoring all triggers (BIG nono), not assuring she is there for her, not looking out for her health and wellbeing, being as disconnected as ever, wanting to be her friend NOT HER PARENT (which is how you get shitty spoiled bitches like Lucy in the first place), not getting to know her friends despite being besties with one of her besties, making the situation about her, not continuing long-term health care for her daughter, moving her daughter away from her family in an extremely critical time of her life (though changing schools wasn't a bad idea), still allowing her daughter to do whatever and walk all over them with no consequences.

Well, it at least gives Lucy's a slightly more believable backstory.

Because BCB is written in such a way that if Lucy and Mike get together, there is no plot, there is no drama. It's like all shitty romances - all about the build up and chase 'will they,won't they?' but not actually about living in the relationship and the challenges that come with it.

It actually just goes to show how flimsy and terrible the plot is, the story couldn't survive on it's own if Lucy and Mike weren't in the picture or mentioned in some way in passing.

Mike will find his redemption when he either dumps / gets dumped by his current GF and fucks off away from the group or at least those who have proven to not ultimately have his back

Lucy is someone who feeds on attentions and reaction. Her whole "I don't give a shit about Mike" think is a facade as she gets off on his misery over what he did and what she is doing now. Once he completely forgets about her she will go back to feeling hollow and start feeding on the next sucker

Alot of fundamental things would need to be changed to repair this comic.

-Make the focus not just Lucy and Mike but all kids as they go through High School
-Have more heavy themes,instead of just a few sprinkled about - fully commit.
-Flesh out characters more,have them interact more, have more focus on relationships that aren't the main ships.
-Have actual character arcs
-Have actual drama that isn't forced or melodrama
-Don't neglect backstories or plot progression for shitty side-stories that contribute nothing.
-Completely rewrite Mike and Lucy, Mike should be a shy bookish type that never understood his potential - with Lucy being the tough go-getter that inspired his confidence, Lucy and Mike don't get tons of attention for their looks and are actually better friends and son/daughter to their families.
-Have more family-centric stuff, rather then the bland shitty stuff we get. Abbey is the only one who came close to having an interesting home-life.
-Completely revamp Abbey,Daisy, Madison - actually give David and Amaya personalities.

I think Lucy's character (naturally beautiful but emotionally weak) works fine if the story admits she's deeply flawed...which it seemed to do for a while but now it's whipped back to her apparently being perfect although she still acts like a turbocunt.

The series could have gotten a lot of mileage out of characters not being what they seem;

Mike seems like a "good boy" straight-edge but underneath that he becomes very bitter

Lucy seems like a tough tomboy but she's actually weak and dependent on Mike

Paulo seems like a dumb jerk but before the nupolo era he was the most sensitive and kind guy in the series. At the very least the "womanizer" shtick is obvious crap since he was only on it when he was a virgin who'd never had a girlfriend.

Daisy seems like a sweet ball of fluff but in vol. 1 she gets lonely and jealous and in a rather different, more recent characterization she's a selfish brat.

Augustus could have multiple layers of this; seems like a white knight for Daisy but he's actually a creep, seems like a 100% creep but he's actually an unwilling lackey with a tragic backstory who just wants to get out, seems apathetic but is starving for love, etc.

I could go on for less important characters.

So actually make it Degrassi with cats instead of just joking about it being degrassi with cats I'm fine with this

I deeply dislike the concept of her being beloved by all who encounter her or want to be her. I get maybe there can be a few people crushing super hard on her (ala Paulo) but the fact pretty much everyone comes around to Lucy's court is just bad unbelievable story-telling.

Emotionally weak,... isn't the word I would use. Maybe emotionally unstable, for sure. We still don't know why she is so tsundere and trusting of Mike because nothing in her home life with her family should elude to that at all. Again, Lucy is based on Taeshi but without the mental scarring her abuse gave her - so Lucy has traits of Taeshi without substance behind it. Lucy is wish-fulfillment for Taeshi without the hardships she faced.

Lucy could've been a nobody then puberty hit her hard and everyone started sexualizing her rather then being super pretty and beloved from the start. Lucy doesn't have enough good traits to go along with her negative ones - even when she is suppose to be cute/snarky it comes off as bitchy and condescending. When she is meant to be showing off her talents or maternal side it just seems phoned in and corny. When she is being """empathetic""" or supportive of her friends she just comes off as blunt and abusive.

Lucy letting her pets go (which is even weirder since they are sentient) or standing up to Alejandro isn't enough to even out all the dumb shit her character has done prior.It also plays into how other characters interact and view her too.

Plus being built upon the shitty tsundere trope doesn't help either.

With some admirable subtly and misdirection Volumes 2 and 3 Jess was built up as a lesbian in love with Lucy but it went nowhere at all and the plot-line simply disappeared when Lucy did.

It could have been interesting as long as the fact that Lucy is straight and wouldn't be interested isn't the point; Jess is a bitter and nasty person who makes all her own troubles; seems like a match for Lucy; maybe she could have recognized her own flaws when seeing them in another person.

This was always my problem with the Sleepover arc. It's like it implied that Jessica and Rachel actions prior in the comic were justified due to Tess' actions. Yeah, Tess was a bitch, but what does Paulo have to do with that?
