I wouldn’t have minded them making Kevin a good guy if they’d gone about it in a sensible way.

Think about it - they already have an established character, with super powers, around Ben’s age who has a link to him from the OS. They can get rid of Max, allowing Ben to be more autonomous, and raising the stakes (because no experienced competent ex-military genius is there to save their hides when the chips are down), and they don’t need to worry about whether or not audiences like the “new” character.

That being said, though, they absolutely rushed through it. Kevin becoming a good guy and then banging Gwen should have been a full season arc. There should have been one or two Kevin centric episodes where he seriously looks back at his time as a youth and realizes he’s going to wind up dead on an asteroid somewhere because he fucked over the wrong intergalactic warlord, along with a smattering of Bplot episodes where he and Ben cross paths and are forced to work together. The whole thing should have culminated in either a mid-season plot heavy episode, or a series finale two-parter where he finally gets his shit together and agrees to be on the side of good.

Goddamn it, hindshight is 20/20, and I actually liked Gwevin once they got past the early shit, but the first few episodes were nothing short of painful. Who approved those, and why?

No, it was so fucking awful.
The effort to appear more "adult" and "mature", like with any retarded teenager, can backfire spectacularly and just come off as a new brand of juvenility - now with extra cringe. They make the fatal mistake of taking themselves way too seriously, which only serves to highlight how genuinely childish AF/UA really is.
The OS and Omniverse don't share AF's identity crisis issues, they are unabashed about what they are and better for it. Hell, even the reboot has the excuse of explicitly targeting small children, not aiming itself at an older age group and face-planting hard on the execution.

AF's the Ben 10 equivalent of "Loonatics Unleashed", albeit the Loonatics gang came off as better friends.

Then they did a piss poor job with it.
Everything in the original series paints Kevin as an 100% unrepentant asshole who repeatedly smacked away any helping hand offered to him.

Ironically the reboot seems to be doing a better job with this.

I had a seething fucking hatred for the reboot since I felt it was an insult to the fandom and I really wanted the show to continue forward rather then start over. But after watching some episodes and seeing some of the neat ideas it introduced (like the Antritrix) I definitely don't hate it as much, it's not bad honestly. Still wish we could've gotten fifth show or hell, maybe a canon comic book spinoff, anything to continue the Ben 10 mythos.

I’m enjoying it so far, mostly the Kevin stuff,

it also made kid Gwen likable instead of a know it all, sassy, bossy, hypocritical , Mary Sue (Gwen 10 what if episode was garbage)

Yeah, I´m honestly only watching the reboot for him.
I´ve only watched the third season and a couple of past episodes, but the 2016 version seems to be...average at best. I avoided it for a long time because it was clearly a dumb show made for kid´s where everyone acted like a moron, but Kevin seems to be the show´s first try at doing SOMETHING with their villains beyond "I´m evil, lol". He´s an asshole, but he isn´t treated like an unredeemable, one-dimensional moron that the heroes have to stop, but as a lonely kid with issues that the heroes sympathize with. Hell, Ben and Kevin have teamed up as many times as they have fought. He´s not a good person but there´s a clear intention that something else is going on with him other than just being a mean bully.
Every villain in this show is lame as hell with the exception of Kevin. Even charmcaster became an evil slut after her first episode. My worry is that Kevin will end up like them because "status quo"
There´s supposed to be a show centered around him, so I´m really hoping they redeem him to the point that when this show ends, he can get his own series. He´s the most interesting character in the show, so he deserves it.
