Personally I don't think many of the stories in the Bible are an account of events that actually happened (because if God did not want us to know things then God would not have let us discover SCIENCE!), just a collection of stories to serve as a moral guideline increasingly falling under scrutiny in an ever changing and evolving society.
Many of the morals are still applicable and sound (at least the ones for not being a raging asshole to everyone), but the context is no longer relevant to modern culture so the interpretation falls apart.
And that's not even getting into all the other stuff.

Not believing is not the edgy part. It is the "no one really intelligent." part. The people who are loud about their lack of faith and beliefs are just as annoying as the people who are loud about having them. Let people believe and practice their faith without being an ass. We are not in a theocracy here, so unless they are in an Islamic land where the law can fuck you over beliefs, there is no reason to belittle the religious.

The difference is, if the Atheist parent is right, nothing changes in the end. Their kid dies and rots in the ground until the end of time. If they're wrong, well, you know. A Christian parent has all the reasons in the world to want their children to hold their beliefs. What does it matter to an Atheist parent? There's never any altruistic purpose to convincing others to be atheists. The world won't magically become a better place if we all stop believing in religion.
