There are some email exchanges a Yea Forumsmrade had with the author where he asked him some of our questions. The guy seems very smart and was very frank about where he originally wanted to go with the story, where he was going with it as he changed and grew over the course of its publication, and the (albeit small) conflicts between what he wanted to do and what the expectations of the publisher were.

It 100% is. Though like with most of these type of things, I don't think it's sinister, but genuine belief that it's the only way, and since I'm all for giving people second chances and helping people rehabilitate, I think it does more help than harm, ultimately.

I thought it was just one of those "western manga" meme comics, but once the porn started flowing, I figured I might as well read it. Can't say I enjoyed it (I dislike the preachy nature and the art is just too simple). But it has an underlying meaning that is only implied, and if they had time to flesh that out I could've enjoyed it a lot more (the author all but confirmed it to be the actual moral of the book). However then it wouldn't have been so easy to sell it as a "Christian" manga.
I just feel too bad about Serenity throughout the entire story. What happens to her leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.
There are several underlying themes which I agree with though, and the author has confirmed those as well as their extrapolation as it would happen after the book ends (ie. how bible cult affects the kids life once they get out of school). I agree with those hidden morals, and I like Serenity as a character, but I don't like the story told in this book. Perhaps if I didn't find the main character as likable, I could have enjoyed the book more.
tl:dr; I liked the main character and the implied morals (that the author confirmed to be the true intention), but I dislike the book, even though I recognize its merits.
