Easy. How can you fight the evil if you don't know its face? How can you understand poor people if you aren't among them but instead you are hidden in your own castle? And how can you help to the people if you don't examine their problems?

Bruce's parents probably thought that they could learn all those things in the dark city because in the richest places people usually hide their own opinion to be likeable for other people, but in the shadows they are allowed to say what they really think.

Now being a good person isn't an excuse to be silly, If I were bruce's parents I wouldn't have enter in a place called "Crime alley" in the night, wearing a suit and jewels and accompanying a kid, that's asking for being killed.

Now talking about Batman himself. He isn't a judge, he apparently can't take that decisions for himself, he is just the person who gives to the real Judges the information that they need to reach a conclusion. Batman isn't that kind of character. The Judges can be Gordon, Redhood or even a villain, but he can't took decisions for them, he is only a helper.

But the main role of Batman is being an objective person. (some people maybe find it annoying even when it's not his intention to be so, but it's necessary)

Personal head canon. This is how Gotham makes sense to ME.

Thomas and Martha made a deal with Ra's Al Ghul to make Gotham great again. Which it worked and thousand flocked to Gotham to make their fortune. Wayne industries we're buying up companies left and right and redistributing back to the poor. Gotham was booming for the middle class.

Enter court of owls who were afraid of losing their companies to Wayne company so they put a hit on the Wayne family. It worked, with the exception the trigger man couldn't kill a kid. With Martha and Thomas out of the picture, Ra's pulled out everything from Gotham. The Court realizing too little too late what the affect of their actions did also pulled out of Gotham and went over seas. Almost overnight all the companies went bankrupt, those who could leave Gotham did.

Gotham now a shell of it's former self with abandoned Warehouses and a huge unemployment rate was the perfect opportunity for the mob families. The mafia came in bought everything dirt cheap and hired any body on the street to be a goon.

This is the Gotham Bruce grew up in. ra's Al Ghul would return to "cleanse" Gotham of evil out of guilt of his part in it becoming a Hell hole it is now. That's why the idea of Batman would never work it's like skimming the top of the water when the whole well is poisoned.

His parents being killed as a part of a big conspiracy is something I hate, just as Pa dying through some elaborate circumstances or Peter being predestined to be Spider-Man sucks for me. The fact they were randomly gunned down and it could have happened to anyone and any child could have been in Bruce's position is important.

Tying back to Thomas being crooked, I like the idea that crime took Bruce's parents away from him but not in the way he first realized. His father's crooked dealings coming back to bite him and hurt his family in the process seems just as powerful as a random mugger killing them, not knowing who they were.

Both scenarios show that no one is safe from Gotham's corruption, whether you're an elite or a crime boss.
