The assumption, and claim from "leaks", is that when he does it then, he's basically destroying the stones. That way, when they go to kill him and take the gauntlet, he's not strong enough that he should easily kill them, but also when they kill him it can be an instant kill instead of leaving people to wonder why Thor didn't go for the head, why Thanos didn't use the stones to heal himself, etc.

Probably, yea. He's smart, he knows the whole universe wants his ass, and more than a few people know what he did and how he did it. It was only going to be a matter of time before he would be killed/overwhelmed and the stones taken from him. He just made sure his plans would stick after he died. Also, he probably revitalized Titan and renamed it New Gamora.
