I don't know if I'd call it silly, but it's kind of underwhelming. I think the point is to keep it specific enough that you could see why Qui-Gon would think Anakin fits the bill, but vague enough that you can understand why everyone is not only skeptical that Anakin is the Chosen One, but skeptical that they're even reading the prophecy correctly.

Prophecies are a significant subplot of the book, and the fact that so many of them are vague and open to interpretation is a big part of it. A lot of modern Jedi basically just ignore prophecies now, and so does Qui-Gon until something happens that makes him think the old Jedi mystics weren't as crazy as people think they were.

He's in a few flashbacks, but mostly he's just in Qui-Gon's thoughts now and then. In a lot of ways Dooku's shadow hangs over the book, since an apprentice Dooku had before Qui-Gon is a significant character and their shared mentor is a big part of their relationship. Since prophecy is a big part of the book, Dooku gets brought up a lot there too since Qui-Gon's interest in prophecies is directly connected to Dooku's fascination with them.

It probably should, but the book makes a point to note that a lot of Jedi don't really take the old prophecies seriously. Most of them think it's just a bunch of Nostradamus crap that only overly imaginative kids and old scholars care about.
As it stands, even knowing how the prophecy turns out there's parts there that are pretty vague. Like who's the nameless? The danger sleeping in an egg seems to be the Sith, but what's this about the past and the future? Possible setup for revelations in Episode 9?

No. This is 7 years before TPM so they might not have met yet. The book does hint that Qui-Gon may have had someone earlier in his life, but they never get specific. Rael (Dooku's other apprentice) just mentions Qui-Gon having done something on Felucia that broke the order's code against love.
Incidentally, the whole thing about Jedi celibacy does come up. Qui-Gon walks in on Rael in bed with a woman and they have a small argument about it. Apparently the Jedi Code's rule against love and attachment doesn't technically say anything about casual sex, so some Jedi use that as a loophole, though apparently it's frowned upon.

He's human, and he's even more of a maverick than Qui-Gon, but in a more laid back manner. He's more like TCW Quinlan Vos in that he's really casual compared to other Jedi and the way his dialogue is written he sounds like he has a Southern accent. So basically it seems like Dooku just keeps producing all these non-conformist Jedi.
