Did anyone else feel like all the ones that were super "realistic" were the absolute worst?
Like, why do they try to make the characters look like real people - even at it's best it still just feels off and uncanny. Do they think it looks good? Do people like this? I just don't understand why would someone put in so much effort to make something that looks so bad.
its whenever they were in the dark that they looked the realist.
Gabriel Rivera
I actually disliked the "stylized" shorts like Zima Blue more than the realistic shorts.
They basically screamed that pretentious LOOK AT HOW UNIQUE THIS ANIMATION IS, SO MUCH BETTER THAN THOSE VIDEO GAMES CUT SCENE ANIMATION YOU ARE INTO, LOOK AT HOW ARTSY AND ORIGINAL OUR ANIMATION IS,
Fuck off.
There is nothing wrong with using a less common animation technique, but dont be a pretentious faggot about it at the expense of good story-telling.
Carter Reed
Still better then heavy metal 2000
Jace Peterson
That's cause simulating light contact on skin is pretty damn hard, I think. It doesn't pass.
Elijah Russell
thats for sure
Leo Nguyen
user, Zimo Blue was fantastic, are you okay?
WAIT! Is that you? Are you the target audience of all those horrible realistic call of duty looking shorts? Please, user, tell me more about yourself - I'm tryin to understand what kind of people make these things and watch them and think that they are good, please user, I need to understand
Andrew Powell
>Did anyone else feel like all the ones that were super "realistic" were the absolute worst
Yes, there were the most boring and most pretentious ones to bare watching.
The only good one was the last one with the russians.
Christian Ward
I liked the concept of monster linking and fighting. Wouldn't mind a season or two of that. Just change the characters back story a little cause it felt to forced. >pretentious The point was to see cool animation. I see that shitty realistic shit all the time. Most of the shorts were generic stories or ideas that need more working.
Lincoln Young
>I liked the concept of monster linking and fighting Yeah, that part was neat, but I feel like it would have been better for like a video game - you get to construct your monster, make your pilot, stuff like that
If they made it into a full season it would be hours of people talking and having drama in fron of cheap sets and then 5 seconds of monster fighting
Cameron Perry
Sonnie’s Edge was edgy and pretentious but it exactly the kind of /u/ I like so I’m conflicted
Noah Wright
>hours of people talking and having drama Then don't do that and just have "monster of the week" with them fighting a different monster and some B-plot that gives enough context and information to the world.
they were essentially tech demos or even just tech demos that were used years ago but dusted off to be in this
Isaac Moore
Realism will always look dated after a few months
Matthew Moore
It's just a commonly used opener for a discussion, user, don't get upset by a simple figure of speech
Cmon buddy, tell me what was your favourite short instead
Charles James
>meanwhile, realistic graphics haven't really looked dated for over ten years now
face it dude, 3d won
Jordan Peterson
Holy shit this.
I don't know why Yea Forums cums over Zinna Blue so much. The only thing cool about it was that the animator from Tron: Uprising worked on it but thats it. >A robot evolved became a hugely successful aritist just so he could turn back into a mindless drone again. What kind of bullshit, liberal story is that?
Hunter Fisher
Shooty bang bang is enough for me.
John Scott
Your right let's just do the advanced AI kills every cause humans are shit story again.
Hunter Evans
Video Games are even more prone to feeling dated when they try to be realistic
>LOOK AT HOW UNIQUE THIS ANIMATION IS, SO MUCH BETTER THAN THOSE VIDEO GAMES CUT SCENE ANIMATION YOU ARE INTO, LOOK AT HOW ARTSY AND ORIGINAL OUR ANIMATION IS, No, they just made a great job, that shit is in your tiny incel mind >MUH VIDYA! no one cares about your virgin videogames
Lincoln Ross
why didnt the guy just fuck the space alien spider monster entity?
Owen Powell
savage
Noah Collins
Yeah, the "realistic" ones were the most dull and uninteresting. Not every one was a masterpiece but at least the ones I didn't like yet were uniquely animated I could at least remember, like the Hitler one.I barely remember the realistic ones except for the girl who loved her ship.
Chase Hill
user are you retarded? the entire thing was meant to show off the animation, nobody wants to see the same shit in an animated anthology
Liam Parker
All of them sucked except for The Witness, Sucker of Souls, and maybe Suits.
Xavier Harris
Videogames are more relevant and respected than cartoons.
Dominic Wood
I wonder if Netflix is going to submit any of those segments to the academy for best animated short...
Has there ever been an awards show specifically designed for cartoons? Video games have the VGAs. The Oscars have an animation category, but they are primarily a film awards show.
Hunter Gutierrez
Who the hell cares about award shows? Both Yea Forums and Yea Forums know they're rigged. Only time Yea Forums ever cares about the VGAs is to shitpost and console war.
Carson Moore
It's called the annies and it's been around for almost 50 years you ignorant shittwat, you could have literally googled it in 10 seconds but instead you spent that time showing off how much of a tard you are
Owen Martinez
>The point was to see cool animation. I see that shitty realistic shit all the time
You just showed how conditioned you are.
In your horribly conditioned mind, all the people that worked on that realistic CG are already forgotten, completely taken for granted, all the effort, no matter how talented they are, automatically means nothing to you, SIMPLY because they work in the realistic CG field. What is worse, you completely lower your criticism level for something like Zima Blue, NOT because of it's actual visual quality level, but the fact that it is simply "different from that stuff you are seen more of", that gives it and automatic 5 stars to you, regadless of quality.
YOU. ARE. CONDITIONED. Biased and completely oblivious to it.
You are like the person that walks into an art museum, and you walk by painting after painting of artists using incredibly realistic technique, and you totally ignore all of it, and you only pay attention to some shitty modern art because "ITS SOOOOO COOOL and different, being different is the only art that matters"
Fucking stupid.
Ryan Walker
It's true. That is why most of the animators and artists work in the video game industry.
This is why I liked Zima so much. Because it doesn’t fucking dick you with cliches
Brayden Cooper
Are you really going this far to defend mediocrity? There’s a reason people liked Zumba blue above the others and it’s clear, you just want to be a contrarian bitch about it for some reason, and be realistic, tons of art pieces are forgotten or never noticed, it’s the fate of many artists stop romantizing their failure by blaming others for it
Zachary Morales
>this things aimed at children it’s better than this other thing aimed at children You have no self awareness of how ridicule you are
Lucas Rogers
Video games are for adults while cartoons are for children.
Landon Jenkins
>games can be for kids, teens and sometimes adults >shit loads of genders. Action, comedy, drama, horror, mystery, porn, etc. >Meanwhile over 90% of cartoons are comedies for kids and action shows were replaced by live action capeshit
I honestly thought most of them were just plain bad. The ones with interesting animation had predictable garbage stories, and the ones with super realistic animation also had garbage stories and really the only good one was Three Robots, which coincidentally is also the only one that ACTUALLY HAD FUCKING ROBOTS.
Cooper Thompson
>disliked the "stylized" shorts like Zima Blue
Imagine being this retarded
Dylan Cook
Hahahaahahahahahahahhahahahahah goddamnit the funniest thing I've seen in Yea Forums
Nathan Sanders
>Lucky 13 Dame ship made me cry like a little bitch
It reminded me of reading the old Euro anthology comics, always great art, standalone stories, usually a bit of a twist ending, sexually charged.
I didn't hate Zima Blue, but the ending left me a bit nonplussed, it kinda glossed over how he became a human in the first place. The one with the cyborg furry werewolf vigilante prostitute was the worst, plotwise, simply because it gave me such thematic whiplash. Asian fantasy! No, steampunk! No, body horror! No, superhero vigilante! The animation was pretty, all of 'em were.
I guess the final one with the Russians was the one I enjoyed most, it was simple straighforward and Kino (And it's nice to see people with guns that work against supernatural enemies for once)
The farmers fighting alien incursions was pretty comfy, and I appreciated the artistry in Beyond the Aquila rift. The reveal was pretty well made.
Evan King
Looks like a PS4 game.
Logan Johnson
>There’s a reason people liked Zumba blue above the others
No, not a lotta people. Just vocal hax like you boi.
> Beyond the Aquila Rift > 3 Robots > Shape Shifters > Sonnie's Edge > The Witness > Ice Age
These were much more commended by everybody, Zima Blue is nothing but dust in comparison. That's because anybody on youtube can make Zima Blue and The Alternate Histories.
Fucking lol
Jonathan Jones
I liked the yogurt one, the alternate histories one, and the robot pool cleaner one.
And that’s it.
Eli Stewart
How can this be called a spirit successor to Heavy Metal? It’s nothing like it at all.
Also they advertised it as being a series for different creators to get a chance to put something unique out there but I saw “blur studios” in the credits for like half of the episodes lol.
Ethan Long
Heavy Metal - Boomers Robot Carnival - Doomers Love Death and Robots - Zoomers
Landon Watson
>but I saw “blur studios” in the credits for like half of the episodes lol. they only worked on 4 (yeah thats not good either) but whats worse is Philip Gelatt adapted most of the scripts. i don't know who this guy is but its not really good for vareity and creativity when you have the same guy working a higher role for all of the stories they all had different directors though
but i don't know why they said this had anything similar to heavy metal
there's no music, there's nothing connecting the stories together, even something cheap like a glowing rock, and none of the stories are adapted from heavy metal which is still around today
the thing about heavy metal is that is really inspired creativity i guess these hacks just saw HEY SWEARING AND DRUGS IN A CAROTON! HOW NOVEL, LETS DO THAT!
Jaxon Perez
I want to turn into a big dragon and force myself on Khanivore.
Zachary Turner
Zima Blue didn't need to be an animation. I think it helped cement the artist as an impossibly successful artist, what with the painting planets and all, but the story itself was more interesting than the animation.
That also made it stand head and shoulders above the rest of the shorts, most of which seemed to have the first story that popped into the writers minds. Zima Blue was written by a real author for a real book. I can honestly say it's the first new sci-fi concept I've enjoyed in years. It's not like people use science fiction to talk about art itself very often.
That's just, like, your opinion, man.
Nolan Sanders
Zima Blue literally was the only story worth telling out of all of them you crazy fuck
Joshua Hernandez
>Zima Blue was written by a real author for a real book.
