I mean, retcons? The guy was basically an angry, ugly manlet that everybody on the team hated for his first five or so years of existence. He only became popular during the Dark Phoenix Saga, and even after then he wasn't really drawn as particularly handsome until around the early 2000s (coinciding with him being played by Hugh Jackman in the movies).
