There have been countless "average kid" protagonists, but most were actually pretty poorly written. Being either a chad superhero disguised as an average loser, or nothing but a gathering of 'every day kid problem' clichés that holds no real personality at all.

He's probably a 3.5 GPA student at best. His only real distinguishing characteristics is that he's organized enough to keep a journal, good enough at writing to compete (then lose) at spelling bees, and he's good at solving puzzles. Beyond that, he's just a kid that thinks he's smarter than he really is but not enough to skip grades or be put in advanced classes.
