It takes balls to walk out into a minefield, even with a detector. And when your detector is not as strong as your fellows, and you walk out ahead of them to give them confidence and the strength they need to move forward? That's leadership. Real leadership.

And I love the visual effect of feeling the khert lines that the mines are connected to. It plays so well, the gold of happy memories tainted by the red pain the line mines would inflict. Its great visual explanation while also calling back to the fight with the first silver.

Duane has been putting points into the Dad skill tree for his entire life.

It was only 15 years ago. The kids would all be old (for Plats) grandpas like Quigley.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, by Duane is, what, twenty years here? And unless I misremember he was in his mid thirties when he died, and it's been six years since he came to Sharteshane. Even if he was 30 when he died it's been at least 15 years. Since plats don't last long after 25 and the kids range from 9 to 15 years old they should all be well on their way.

I was thinking about what would be a "bad end" for Duane and I think I realized a fate that would be to him horrible. Him becoming deified and replacing Ssael as their object of worship by his people

I don't know, what if he continues to grow as a person and from his like, immortal perspective realizes that Ssael's method is too slow, there is too much suffering, and he can do a better job? Maybe Duane in the future would WANT to become leader. He did have ambition and confidence before his gruesome death and losing Mikaila shattered it. Sette's building his optimism back up. I could see him one day wanting to take greater measures to fix the world.

I think the worst end for Duane would just be slogging on as a corpse through eternity, watching the world leave him behind, lonely and sad and increasingly unable to help anyone.

I think its less that he is willing to take risks or make sacrifices, and more that he isn't willing to spread a horrible plague to gain a little political leverage. He is capable and competent as a dad, soldier, spellwright, and priest, but fairly piss poor at being a politician. He is also far too idealistic to do horribly pragmatic things.

I think the quote is more in reference to the 'current day' Duane. Where he recently had his fit last night in the shrine. And in reference to how we are going to see him in the near future, and when he meets the Bitch-queen. Ashley said he was going to get a lot more prickly when that comes up. It happens on and off. Sometimes it's just the page, but often it's more than anons get to discussing the long term mysteries of the story or general setting points. I recall it happening often around the end of the Deadly Nevergreen Part 2 chapter.

Yes. Will is the son of the manly looking Silver in the last two panels here. I don't think it's come up in story yet, but Ashley has mentioned that Duane saving Will's life during the revolt resulted in him being a big reason Duane got to the high position he had despite being a Soude. Up until this chapter, Will's largely been a joke. He's got some bit part in the flashback, where aside from his comedic interactions we also learn that he's complete ass at Pymary. In some of the volume extras we also learn Duane kind of picks on him in class, largely because of aforementioned assness at Pymary. Nothing terrible, but kind of mean. Duane doesn't seem to like his father much either, which further complicated the relationship.

This chapter kind of recontextualizes a lot of what he'd heard and seen about Will and his father before.

Duane's been a bit of a dick to a number of people, primarily Crescians or Crescian-adjecent people, but that only adds to his charm. We're supposed to learn about him doing some Bad Stuff this chapter that Ashley says might make us not like him. Anything she does is only going to make me like him more because him being the flawed man struggling towards good is what I find appealing about him. He's never been pure good, finding out what he's done wrong in contrast to the good things we've seen him do only adds depth to his character.

Bring it on Cope, try and make me dislike Duane after this chapter!

I may have overstated it, but I do recall Duane kind of picking on Will in one of the volume extras, specifically calling him up to the front of the class to help in a demonstration despite knowing he wasn't gonna be great at it. The nature of this chapter and Duane's relationship with the Argentis getting expanded, however, helps I think. Before it just kind of seemed like Duane being generally petty, but knowing he's been around Will for awhile and that Will's essentially been something like a god kid of his much like the Plat soldiers he looked after make his treatment of Will look more like familiar and paternal prodding rather than a teacher being a bit of a bully. Familiarity and history change the tone of a lot of relationships.

I always interpreted it more on the side of familial jibes rather than being a jerk. They struck a very familiar tone with one another, how Will is hanging out with Lemuel, how Mikaila is messing around with him. Much closer than it seems castes generally get along. Mikaila even used Will to poke at Duane saying he had pretty eyes. I don't think Mikaila was jonesing after some silver cockthough Silver lust runs in the family, but that's not the sort of thing you say about someone that isn't close to the group. Especially with the big NO on caste-mixing over there.

I think the degree to which that's true is probably pretty well-established, historically. Ssael wrote about EVERYTHING, and I don't expect someone who loved the sound of his own pen that much to have left too many surprises about his character.
