Suddenly, Cass was in the palace kitchen, mountains of dirty dishes in front of her. Her shirt was still wet from Rap's hands.

"What? Don't try to trick me, I know you're not-"
"Hush, we've already established that. I'll wash, you dry." She pulled up a stool and put her hands in the suds. Cass robotically picked up a towel.
"Who are you?" She demanded, with all the force she could muster as she wiped down a plate she was handed. It was the finest china. The Coronation china.
"There are so many names," Crowley mused as she polished a stubborn spot on a salad fork. "But Xhan Tiri will suffice. What is it you want, Cassandra?"
"What?"
"What is it you want out of life? Love, respect, power? Everybody wants something," she crooned as she pulled a sword out of the foam. "I'll dry this one Cass, Lord knows you can't handle swords anymore."
Cass shook her head clear and saw the dimly lit armory. Her father stood at attention, staring straight ahead.
"Try the bastard sword," he demanded, not even looking as she pathetically try to swing it. Her withered hand had no strength, her healthy one no finesse. She'd seen peasants shovel pig shit with more grace. "Try the hand-and-a half, the rapier, the claymore, mace, flail, axe, shortsword!" He rattled off everything in the armory.
"I can't," she croaked hoarsely. She felt her eyes burn.
"Try the dagger then," he sneered, his features taking on Fitzherbert's. "That's a woman's weapon. Though I can't tell if you wanna put it in Blondie's back or cut her out of her clothes with it!"
She was back with the caravan, they'd stopped for the night. Fitzherbert and Raps cuddled sickeningly by the fire.
"Envy is a green-eyed monster Cass. All the monsters in your life have green eyes, don't they?" Shorty burbled as he sat up from the dirt.

the only down side of having Cass as a villain is she'll probably have way less screen time over the season compared to regular party members.

Rapunzel is the worst friend to have because she's not inherently malevolent. She's selfish and ignorant of other people's emotions. Traits all sociopaths possess. Varian and Cassandra chose to help her out of their own goodness, traits that Rapunzel exploited for her own benefit while completely unaware of how much it was costing them to care for her.
That's why they couldn't tell her how much of a jerk she is to her face, they felt guilty due to her upbringing so they kept helping her, all while piling up resentment every time she let them down.
Since they were guilt tripped into accepting she wasn't at fault, the anger built up until they exploded and drove them both to insanity. Meanwhile Rapunzel went on her merry way to pursue whatever picks her fancy.
To reach her destiny, she will gladly step on the corpses of her followers, using them to build a stairway to her dream. She will offer her friends and lover to unspeakable horrors on a whim, all while keeping that smile on her face.

She'll get a ton of screen time during perhaps the first couple episodes and then we'll only catch up to her during plot episodes. Now, how many fucking plot episodes does a season from this series have? Very fucking few, that's how many.
I think that exactly like Lord Demantius, Varian's science ("alchemical") engineering uses for the "magic shit" like the drop and stone are potentially limitless. He's not ready yet but it presents new possibilities for innovations no one has achieved before. What role he'll actually have to play isn't clear, though. It would make a certain amount of sense for them to team up against Corona, but he also tried to kill her. But does this new Cass (if it's even Cass) care about that or anything else any more? And might Varian fight against her instead in an echo of the past? Or maybe they'll all team up to fight the real big bad?

Rapunzel has a compulsive need to help everyone and everything. This is both a product of her naturally kind and agreeable disposition, but also her childhood truama. Gothel would lose her mind if Punzie ever rocked the boat. To her, keeping people happy is not just a personal preference but also necessary for survival. This is why she acts so autistic about Monty. She can't have people hating her because she cares deeply what others think and when she was in the tower being hated meant eating gruel for a month and isolated.
This is bad because, as queen, Punzie is going to have to piss people off because you have a finite kingdom with equally finite resources. A good monarch can try and keep everyone happy but have to accept they eventually won't.
Enter Varian. He's a nice kid Punzie liked a great deal. She lets him down - for a very good reason, I might add - but still feels terrified of the fallout. She might have had good reason but the consequences were dire. She's never pissed anyone off this badly before.
Needless to say, Punzie is terrified. She avoids Varian because she could barely handle minor dislike from Monty or Gothel for reasons as petty as redesigning the seal or asking to see lanterns. Now she has to explain to her friend why, from a utilitarian perspective, it was ethical she let his dad die.
You are wondering why is a supported ship more popular than a non supported one.
I'm fine with asexual because I'm a degenerate who gets off on both but the girls act too friendly. Is it right? Nope. Does it make sense? Oh yeah. And the great thing is we see that Rapunzel has learned her lesson albeit Varian was the price for that lesson.
Throughout season 2 Rapunzel has been repeatedly offered chances to relinquish responsibility (and thus any position of power where she disappoints and hurts others), and yet she insists she has to move forward anyway.
We see this with Cass. Cass throws a temper tantrum because Raps isn't the naive little ingenue fresh from the tower, but a Queen coming into her own. She complains Raps "stopped trusting (her) judgement". Raps is upset Cass is upset but sets her straight. Being Queen means making decisions and mot everyone is going to be happy all the time. If Cass was given special treatment it would be unfair to Raps' subjects and cripple her ability to make good decisions as a leader. And what do you know - Raps was right! Adira was helpful and the only reason Cass said otherwise was because she was bitter about being second fiddle to a sexy Amazon.
The epitome of this occurs in Rapunzeltopia. Raps gets a world where she makes no one mad. Her tad is perpetually delighted. She doesn't reject Eugene's proposal. She even doesn't have to feel bad about Big Nose and Freiborg since they're hooked up! Note that, despite only appearing in the storyboards, the description for this episode includes the phrase "a world where Varian never happened".
And that's because, despite not appearing, Varian is key to this episode. He is the instance where Raps realises she doesn't need to be afraid of pissing people off, and that running away from upseting others is only going to make things worse. She needs to do her best as queen, and try to explain her motivations rather than acquiescing, fleeing, or retreating.

Cass' character is defined by her ambition, and it's what juxtaposes her from Raps and Eugene and alligns her character with Varian, a character who highlights this attribution.
All Cass wants is to be a great, recognised warrior. In the confines of Corona society, this means being a palace guard. Cass expresses this multiple times:

>Great Expotations where she obsesses over getting guard duty
>the entirety of Waiting in the Wings
>the Valentines' day episode
>Fitzgerbert PI
>her anger at Adira
Cass wants to be a hero.
A common thread here is that Cass resents anyone that gets in the way of her status as hero. In the games episode,

Cass is furious about this. She is so unbelievably mad that Raps is stealing the limelight that she REMOVES RAPS' WEAPON FROM THE CART DURING THE MELEE. Raps could have - at worst - been seriously injured because she had no weapon and at best was looking at a crushing defeat. Thankfully, Cass has a change of heart and helps Raps. Despite this small redemption, Cass doesn't admit the truth to Raps. Rapunzel just thinks Cass was being a cunt all day (which she was) and says she's sorry oblivious to the fact her friend just put her physical safety in jeopardy because said friend is an attentionwhore.
In "Fitzherbert, PI", we see Cass relishing the prospect of Eugene failing guard training. She likes to think she's the tough one.
In fact, a lot of Cass' antagonism towards Eugene could be a product of jealousy. Eugene, like Cass, is an orphan. Unlike Cass, Eugene goofed around living as a thief for years, then stumbled ass backwards onto the princess and got to become a hero after years of humiliating her father and his men.

Cass, on the orher hand, worked her ass off every singlr day and did what she was told (put a pin in this!!!) and she got fuck all. I'm sure Cass' feelings aren't entirely selfish. She comments on aspects of Eugene's behaviour that do make him a bad future monarch and boyfriend. In Queen for a Day she calls him out on ordering servants around for laughs (probably because she IS a servant). These are fair criticisms. However, just because Cass may have some good reasons to dislike Eugene, that does not mean all of her vitriol towards him is justified. Cass clearly has a chip on her shoulder where Eugene is concerned and is a cunt to him for basically no reason a good portion of the time. Cass is blunt to most people, but with Eugene it's a little much. This suggests she's mad about something else and jealousy over his dumb luck at being the deuteragonist of Tangled seems reasonable.
Finally - Adira. Adira triggers Cass so fucking bad she begins to replicate her jealous, petty pattern of behaviour with Eugene now in over drive.
Cass does not initially dislike Adira. That's because when Adira first appeared, it wasn't Cass' role she was taking over, but Eugene's. In the forest episode, Adira makes Eugene look like a laughingstock. This is also the episode where Cass says that she likes this lady!
Then the mid-season special comes along. Adira is no longer infringing on Eugene's role in the group, but Cass'. Now suddenly Cass has a fucking problem. Now Adira can't be trusted. Now she needs to lip off exactly the same way she did in season 1 to Eugene. Now Cass wants a fucking fight.

Yep, I've struggled with this a lot too, user. I think people are a little too "logical" when discussing potential plot holes and forget genuine human awkwardness. This is why I love Tolkien. Fucking Frodo pisses around the Shire procrastinating before setting off in Fellowship. Classic.

It is so clear that Cass' problem is not that Adira is a threat to Raps or the mission but to her that is the problem. Cass then formulates an excuse to justify her dislike. Just like with Eugene, these reasons aren't wrong. Just like how Cass had a point about Eugene being a dick in Queen for a Day, she has a point about Adira; they don't know her and she could be a threat. My point her is not that Cass' objections are wrong in of themselves, but that they come not from skepticism but jealousy.
A real life example would be a friend that you get into political arguments with. Whenever they find a study that supports their POV, they accept it blindly. Whenever they find something that disagrees, suddenly they're clambering for citations and want to sift through the methodology. The criticisms your friend comes to about the latter study may be completely rational and valid. Maybe the sample size was too small. Maybe the alpha value was too big and all encompssing. Maybe Eugene shouldn't boss servants around. Maybe Adira should be treated with caution. But you know your friend isn't scouring your citations because they are guided by the true light of reason - they're doing it because they don't want to be wrong! Likewise, Cass' hyper-skepticism of Eugene in S1 and Adira in S2 is a rational thing that comes from an irrational place.
Cass sings a whole song about how inadequate Adira makes her feel just to emphasise how illogical her actions are. Angry over Eugene and Adira, Cass lashes out at Rapunzel. Put a pin in that, too!!! What we're seeing thus far is that Cass wants to be a hero and is hostile to anyone who threatens her role.
Another thing about Cass is that she doesn't have much in her life besides being a warrior. Her only friends are Raps, Eugene, Varian, and the S2 crew. What's significant here is that, besides Varian, all of these friends are a direct product of her relationship with Rapunzel.

Cass' lack of other priorities is spelled out in the Valentines' episode. By the way Raps and Eugene act, this is Cass' first boyfriend... and it turns out to be a ruse. The only time we see Cass doing something besides aspiring to be a guard or hanging around Rapunzel...it turns out she's actually still trying to be a guard and also ends up hanging around Rapunzel. Cass is the sort of person who is more likely to be behind a crazy spy scheme to protect Corona than to go on a date with a boy. She's 23. Think about what that says about her internal emotional life. "Workaholic" doesn't even begin to cover it.
So Cass wants to be a hero. Hates anyone who interferes. Has nothing going on in her life besides work.
Enter Rapunzel. Why does Cass fixate so much on her? Well, part of it is her job - she is her lady in waiting. Another part is she is Cass' first true friend. However, a good proportion of it is that Raps is the only one who gives Cass the validation she craves.

So Cass wants to be a warrior, dislikes anyone who overshadows her, has little else in her life and is dependent upon Rapunzel's adulation.
We've also Cass sacrifice others for her own ambition. The games episode shows her screwing over Raps. However, the most obvious example is her treatment of Varian in Great Expotations.
In Great Expotations, we get a microcosm of what Cass does at the end of S2. Like Rapunzel, Varian is a less mature person who idolizes Cass. Although a touch annoying, their over-eagerness to help eventually aids Cass in such a way they earn her fondness. Despite the fact that Varian hauled ass all day for her sake and made it possible for Cass to reach her dream, she betrays him at a moments notice.
Cass realizes she fucked up and says to Varian:
>"Thanks. And, Varian, about putting my own ambition in front of our friendship, I'm sorry."
This is one of the most important lines in the series with regards to Cass' character. Despite saying this, when Varian turns evil, Cass doesn't check up on him. She doesn't question maybe there's something going on. She relishes the chance to lead the charge on him. We now know she is exactly the kind of person who would stab someone in the back to advance her own career. She has done it before twice and she will do it again.
Cass betrayed Varian after this perfect husbando little boy with a big crush on her worked all day for her sake alone. How do you think she's going to treat someone who has prioritized their own destiny over hers...

So why did Cass do it?
As several people pointed out, something happened behind that door. However, I disagree with the posters who argue that Cass is possessed or "isn't herself". It's emotionally cheap writing. Rapunzel fighting someone with whom she has emotionally bonded to is way more effective than her fighting a stranger, and those rules apply if that stranger wears Cassandra's skin. Besides the fact that the writing would be shit, I feel that these posts have proven that it is foreshadowed and well within Cass' personality to betray people.
I do not think that Cass, as some argued, is doing this "for" Rapunzel. Eugene's line about the traitor trying to help Raps was clearly foreshadowing his own behaviour. We know how someone acts when they betray their friend for reasons they think of as right - Eugene did it. They get sad, quiet, and downcast. Eugene was trying to help Rapunzel and he looked miserable the whole time. Cass at the end of the episode sounds far too giddy, sarcastic and smug to be doing it "for Rapunzel". She's doing it for herself.

I think that, while behind the door, Cass was told she could have everything she always wanted if she gets the moonstone. Her arm is fixed, she gets magic hair powers, and her skin becomes unbreakable armor. Her pettiness was likely validated - Raps and Eugene were spoiled whereas she suffered and earned her happy ending. All of these things have calcified Cass' frustration and convinced her she is now entitled to the power of the moonstone to compensate for her previous troubles.
I also believe that Cass' injury was not limited to her arm. As Eugene points out, it's really fucking weird to be crawling across a gorge in armor. Cass was not making a fashion statement (armor is so last Fall anyway!), she was trying to cover up the fact that the scarring has spread throughout her body.
I believe this to be the case for three reasons. First, is that it explains Cass' refusal to remove her armor under any circumstances. Secondly, I think it is the push she needs to betray Rapunzel. It isn't just that she lost her arm - when that first happened Cass was still determined to be a hero by training her other arm and did make some progress. It's not just her arm anymore, Cass is slowly losing everything and now she is completely desperate. She's not facing inconvenience or setbacks - she has dealt with that - she's dealing with death or encasement in a fashion not unlike that of Quirin.
Finally, I think it makes symbolic sense. Cass' jealousy, ambition, and envy has been slowly engulfing her and hardening her heart to the people around her. The rocks are swallowing the world. The scar is climbing up Cass' arm and will swallow her whole. Gothel used the power of sundrop to fight off the corrosive power of time. Cass uses the moonstone to fight off the trauma of injury.
It's a perfect metaphor and parallel. It's like pottery.

So what will happen to Cass? My theory is that, like Varian, she will eventually be redeemed because this is a Disney show. I'm not exactly sure how.
One final point I want to make is that the series draws comparisons between Cass and Varian which juxtaposes them with Eugene and Raps.
Cass and Varian want to be admired by people. Cass sings about wanting cheers during "Waiting in the Wings", a song that relies heavily on theater conventions regarding center-stage. Varian wants his town, but especially his father, to regard him as the one who "saved the day" and to "come back triumphantly".
Raps and Eugene never sought adulation. Raps dream was to "see the glowing lanterns dream". Eugene's dream is Rapunzel herself - having a family and a home. Raps and Eugene have never sought power or prestige over others. All they have ever wanted are the simple things in life - a fun night of lantern gazing, someone to love them.
I'm not sure where the show is going with this, but I find it interesting nonetheless. The similarity between "Waiting in the Wings" and "Let Me Make You Proud" - Great Expotations even alludes to this!

I never really bothered to get into any genuine analysis of this show's themes or whatever (Since it's a fucking babby show and I don't have the time for that), but this is really good shit user. Especially the stuff about Raps and Varian, makes the situation make a whole lot more sense and easier to swallow. I could see a moment in S3 where where Cass betrays Varian after they team up or whatever and instead of leaving Varian for dead, Raps saves him and over the course of a few episodes they both get a redemption: Raps for not being there for him and Varian for being the autist creep he was.

That's a really interesting take on it. I had always read the way Cass disliked Eugene as just her being a lawfag who shared her fathers dislike of him getting off scot-free, but this is a much more interesting interpretation.
I'm not sure I agree about Eugene not seeking adulation. A large part of the film is him learning to get over his image consciousness and be more authentically himself. And a couple of times in the first season he gets annoyed by people not recognizing the skills he has from his old life. Sure, 'be recognized as a dashing rogue' is pretty different from the kind of acclaim Cass and Varian want, but its there. Perhaps if Cass or Varian get redeemed that's going to be a theme going forward? Rapunzel being someone who steps into peoples lives and cures them of self destructive glory seeking?

They seem pretty wealthy, probably because they keep the nobility small and taxes are low. Would be fun to see them aiming for expansion to other kingdoms.
