As a former bully this actually doesn't work most of the time. Bullies pick on the small and weak because it's easy and hilarious. Even if they manage to beat you up it usually results (at least in my experience) getting some friends together and waiting for the kid after class then beating the shit out of him, possibly taking some of his things. One time this kid thought he was tough and punched my friend in the face, so we waited for him after school, beat him up, took his new shoes and threw them up on a power line.

The whole "challenge your bully" thing doesn't really work unless the bully is just all talk.

There are different kinds of bullies. My brother used to be bullied by a kid back at elementary and when my father complained and the teachers didn't do anything, he actually told him to defend himself and punch him in the face. Next day my father gets a call from school because my brother had actually punched the kid so hard they had ended at the principal's office, where my dad admited to have told him to punch him and blamed the school for not doing their job.

There were also some bullies actually one grade younger than us in Jr. High but we'd actually stand for ourselves even if the three were always together. Last I knew, one of them eventually got expelled. It was actually a shame, one of them used to be a good friend because our parents would do reunions a lot.

Because that actually happens semi-regularly. I had it happen to me twice growing up. There's a lot of good literature on the subject of how boys and men learn to function as groups. Though most of the modern stuff that hates traditional gender roles is questionable at best.

Then there's a few more episodes from the PPG where one writer says "Oh no we can't leave the townspeople defenseless for even 1 day"(Speed Demon) and the other writer has the PPG sitting on a cloud and saying "FIGURE IT OUT, RETARDS. We're done being your babysitter and blaming everything on us. Defend yourselves"

Same with Samurai Jack's wacky comedy episodes compared to the serious action episodes.
