Has he ever elaborated on this, by any chance? Yeah Terezi is a psychopath and expert manipulator, but only when she wants to be. Mostly she just seems like a genki anime girl. I can't imagine Karkat being the toxic component and if anything he's infinitely more level headed than Terezi. It's true (As in it's a fact of the story) it's relevant (As in it's important for the story's proceeding), and it's essential (As in it allows the story to reach it's eventual conclusion). Stuff that's not in canon is either Out of Canon or Non Canon. Out of Canon is stuff that you can reasonably assume from the story, but isn't "On screen". For example, Kevin's parents leave him and drive to the airport, but the movie doesn't show us every step of their drive along whatever highway took them to whatever airport, since it doesn't matter. It definitely happened in the story, since you can make logical inferences about certain events, but isn't in the movie since it would be boring (Irrelevant and nonessential) since it doesn't advance the plot or characters to see two parents taking a boring drive to an airport. Lastly, stuff that's Non-Canon can be either Essential or Relevant, but isn't true. That'd be like how real life actor Macaulay Culkin grew up to have drug problems. That didn't happen to Kevin, just the actor. So if someone asserts that Kevin later grows up to have drug problems, that'd be Non-Canon, since it's not true.
