Amethyst is a comic about Amy Wilson an average girl who discovers she is the long lost princess of the house of Amethyst in the fantastical land of gemworld, she can go back and forth between earth and gemworld and most of the story is about her balancing her magical adventures with her normal life.
Her allies are:
>Her adoptive parents who live on earth
>The Witch Mother Citrine as the mentor
>Granch as the muscle
>Prince Topaz as the love interest
>Lord Garnet as the badass warrior that trains her
>Lady Turquoise as the warrior princess who is her friend but also love rival
>And others like the emerald sisters, Lord Aquamarine, the diamond monk, Amy’s dog and others
Her enemies are:
>Dark Opal as the big bad

>And others lilke the emissaries of Verns, Jade the witch and the ancient ones.

Volume 1 is about her discovering her heritage, training to use her magic and railing allies to defeat the evil warlock know as Dark Opal.
Volume 2 introduces a new villain name Jade and has a more complicated storyline with Amethyst realizing some of her allies are despots in their home kingdoms and her becoming allies with old enemies. The human world cast also becomes more involved in the story.
Then something happened, the original writer team that created the concept leave the book due to creative difference with the editors of DC, so the last third of volume 2 is written by a different team and is pretty much a soft reboot of the book.
Volume 3 is a whole new adventure taking place decades later with the children of the original cast as protagonist
Decades later they rebooted the series in the new 52, after that Bendis rebooted the series once again in his Young Justice book.

Extremely pretty art, which isn't surprising coming from her.
The two big issues though. Brianne leans hard on cheesy dialougue at times. I actually dropped the comic because the point I was at had been literal pages of nothing but puns with literally no plot or character progression. I couldn't take it any more. Second problem is all the characters are cliches. Which isn't necessarily bad, but it makes it harder to sit through the less than stellar parts when you feel like you've seen all this before.
Otherwise the characters are still well done. Cast and setting are comfy because you don't really have to think about what you're looking at, which makes the more original ideas stand out because it's all so competently done.
It's one of those comics I don't read, but would heartily reccommend.

The young justice version of gemworld really bugs me down, the new 52 version was different but at least it was cleat it was a different interpretation.
Bendis gemworld seems to be different but has enough similarities with the original that the things that did change really piss me off
For example you have Dark Opal straight out of the old comics but Carnelian is now a big muscular guy with a giant axe. Amethyst looks take straight from the cartoon but personality wise is the polar opposite from both her cartoon and original comic version.

Amethyst was a much better short.
Part of why I like the comic is the gorgeous watercolor art, which is sadly lost in translation to the pilot. The harpy short has flat, untextured visuals; if that makes sense.
I also prefer Amethyst's character archtype to Harpy's. They're polar opposites. One's a fish out of water trying to balance a bunch of spinning plates, the other is extremely competent and comparatively laid back in a small setting.
Harpy is delicious brown though, so she has that going for her. Also the mayor is based.
