I kept expecting it to take a turn into kiddie schmaltz territory and reveal he has a heart of gold, but he really is just a horrible prick. That was the first book if I remember correctly, Greg and Rowley were playing a game where Greg would throw a football to hit Rowley while he was riding a bike downhill. This led to Rowley flying off the bike and breaking his arm. When Rowley started getting attention from girls Greg chimed in he broke Rowley's arm leading to the reaction you'd expect. Later on though Greg pretended to have an infection on his arm and wrapped it in gauze. Because of how difficult it is to sign gauze he tried to get people to sign a sheet of paper he carried with h3 called a sympathy sheet.

In the same book Greg and Rowley became hall monitors/crossing guards and walked little kids home. Greg started picking on the little kids and a lady saw him and thought he was Rowley. So Greg let's Rowley take the fall and he's kicked off. Later Greg tells Rowley it was really him but makes it sound like it wasn't a big deal. I think it was this that made them not be friends for a while.
At some point in the series I genuinely wondered why Rowley hung around Greg.

I did find it worked that in the last book he started talking about how he lives in a twisted world and that all women are evil. It was also weird how Holly just left and was never seen again.
