America didn't censor anything. There was no backlash, it wasn’t released in its original version here, no one pressured them to change it because no one here knew about it. The company just decided to make them purple to it be misinterpreted. It was entirely their choice and it isn’t and has never been censorship. It’s as much of censorship as Pokémon changing food items to better fit in with the country it’s airing in is

Well Darth Vader is a little differernt, it's not a guy that turned dark from evil corruption, it's just a guy in a dark suit of "armor". The trope relates to the character turning black on the skin itself. With the expressiveness of the black Smurfs, it was easier for Americans to assume it could be mistaken as the Black Face, so they had to change it. Same thing happened to Jinx and Mr.Popo from Pokemon and DBZ respectively.

It's basically a lack of content and the expressiveness of the facial features, which include big eyes and huge lips/mouths, all featured in the Smurfs comic/Pokemon and DBZ examples mentioned before.
