I doubt palpatine has been alive this whole time. Maybe Snoke was a failed clone. Or a failed creation of paplatine. Maybe Rey is somehow a pawn of him.

I don't think it will be too jarring to only have him in this film of the trilogy as long as it's implied his influence has been throughout the past two as well.

You guys are well aware "Rise" is a Christ metaphor, right? Luke himself rising from the dead, but in the way of the Force, as in, having a physical presence in the world manifesting as a Ghost but as a Force Projected entity (like his last fight with Kylo).
And this might explain why Palpatine is back: He managed to find a way to cheat death by stepping from the Beyond, as discovered by the portal in Mustafar that Vader opens.

I don't know, the novelization of the Force Awakens made Snoke seem like he was much more ancient. This film may just be a "return of the jedi" remake but I'm pretty sure Disney and JJ know that they gotta make this movie have all the fanservice after Rian made 50% of the population hate Star Wars.

The novelizations, as much as Lucasfilm wants to pretend they are canon, already have contradictions. They are only canon until they aren't.

there's a canon "space between time" that Lothal and Coruscant, among other planets, have portals to. Only force sensitives can activate them, but once you're inside, you can see through other portals to any other point in time and even hear voices from the past/from the future.

the first part is from the newest Thrawn book, so at minimum, that part is already true.
The reason they're called Skywalkers is because the Chiss use the force sensitive children as their pilots. They live in the Unknown Regions where no maps exist, so the pilots use the force to "walk through the sky" aka pilot like normal people elsewhere in the galaxy.

My heart will be fine because like most of the general audience I've fallen out of Star Wars. It can succeed or fail, however I don't think Rian will survive this but at the same time I don't care if he does because I have no interest in his future films if there are any after Knives ou. If you want to debate the details like I was trying to do I'm game but if the best you can roll out is this "no you" nonsense then I'm questioning if your heart is handling the devil in details that Star Wars future and all that have touched it is rested squarely on 9's success or failure and that includes this mediocre director's fate as well.

Bringing back Ian as palpatine was one of the stupidest moves they could have made. Not because of story, but because of talent. He is a theatre-trained actor with decades of experience under his belt. He will now be in a movie where only Kylo (and Lando) can hold their own on screen.
