Barnyard would have been a far better moovie if Otis and Ben were dogs defending the farm. It'd make more logistical sense and the more mature themes wouldn't come off as comical. But Odekirk has some weird infatuation with cows so whatever.

The kid somehow remembered Otis of his dead father, so he named him "Ben", like his dad.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, I think Otis was adopted by his "dad" as well.
And then, in the show, Otis meets another young cow...
