I think the issue is that some designs for pokemon work better with a cartoon style, some better with a realistic style, and some are neutral to either.
Pikachu himself seems alright in either style.

I've listened in on this guy's streams for his dinosaur game, and he's such an unbearable snob about the most inane things and uses the word "objectively" when talking about his tastes. I get the feeling his friends don't really like him.
