I don't know if it's the WORST per se, but one which I always found to be at once baffling and both intellectually and creatively offensive:

In the 1980s D&D cartoon, there were a group of teenaged protagonists. One of them was the naysayer of the group; the voice of doubt, the guy pointing out when everyone else might be engaging in groupthink and making mistakes. In any other story, this would be an admirable and necessary trait.

BUT.

The whole and sole reason he was a part of the show was a directive given by the network: They wanted to promote groupthink as a high virtue. So there would be this one character who would question the group and would ALWAYS be wrong. He was there to show kids how wrong and bad it was to think for yourself or to question the crowd in any way. This was literally something the writers were told they had to include in the story.

I cannot for the life of me imagine how frustrating as writers it must have been to be told to include a character as part of the main cast whose sole purpose was to push such a wrongheaded "moral." A sentiment that legitimately feels like it's straight out of 1984.

I know some of the characters can seem frustratingly tied to personality gimmicks (Pink horse) but the show usually does try to say that working to be better is good

I find the episode where pink horse is playing an obnoxious instrument and gets depressed when told to knock it off much worse. Instead of just telling her to play where it doesn’t bother people or her realizing that hobbies need to be enjoyed with respect to those around you, the other horses resolve to just bite the bullet because it makes her happy

From what I can tell it was at its worst in the 70s and 80s, mostly because nobody respected animation back then. The people working on the shows really had no way of fighting back because up until 87 or so it was insanely rare for someone who worked on a cartoon to be able to become a producer. Most of the time shows made back then were created by businessmen, not artists or writers

The message wasn't that you should never try to improve, it was that sometimes obstacles are too big for you to be able to face them alone and you need to allow other people to help you overcome them.

The main obstacle was Jasper herself but both she and Amethyst were also dealing with issues around self loathing and acting obsessively and self destructively because of it. Amethyst beat Jasper and was able to start getting over her insecurities and loving herself when she accepted Steven's support, but Jasper succame to corruption because she allowed her self worth issues to reach a point where she felt broken and worthless and refused the help she needed to start accepting herself or moving on from the past.

Amethyst could never train enough to become as physically strong as Jasper, but she improved herself by becoming more confident and mature.
