Jesus none of them are even the MC's sidekick, they are all literal side characters' sidekicks

I dunno if they're token just because they're the only black main character. Like I'd never consider Irwin a token black, or someone like the TF2 Demoman, despite being the only black main characters. I can't really articulate why.

Attached: demoman.png (374x342, 147K)

yo suck my dick yo

I was about to mock you for having Connie there but then I remembered her dad.

...

irwin's more of a side character
the real trope is token black best friend though you could argue irwin's billy's best friend

>black nerd friend
Why is this such a common trope?

To ensure they're not intimidating.

because they want representation but not enough to scare away all the viewers

guess we got craig of the creek now though

All these post and not a single mention of my nee-gga Tucker?

Attached: Tucker.png (480x445, 74K)

it probably started as a subversion of the over used cool hip black kid trope then became over used itself as time went on, kinda like how the dumb-ass dad trope was to the all was right slandered 50's dad trope.

Attached: fry.jpg (451x451, 46K)

The only black people the nerds making these shows ever knew personally were nerds as well and you write what you know. Just be glad they don't try to make them "hip" and we revert to the age where every black kid wore a backwards baseball cap and rapped.

He's less token black friend and more Danny's bitch boy (all that Val drama).

Mina isn't asian

Meatwad is black too, not the actor, but the character

Because it's actually really common. The token black kid is either a nerd, a weeb, or a combination of both.

Whoa, that token black friend isn't nearly nerdy enough! Put him in a sweater or a pair of glasses and give him social issues!

I think him and his dad's are a step in the right direction because blacks have a looking history of being anti-gay

Why do these shows think that all Black People are into Basketball even if most of their area isn't?

Most kids just play the sports that dominant in their area , a 10 years old black kid in a mixed area where nobody plays basketball is likely gonna follow whatever is popular there

Have you heard of the videogame Overwatch? It's an extremely diverse online shooter with a cast of characters from all over the world, here are the basic descriptions of some of them:

>the Indian is an OCD cleanliness perfectionist
>the Chinese is polite and wants to protect the environment
>the German is jolly and friendly
>the Swede is a literal dwarf
>the Brazilian is a cool guy all around

Are you noticing the pattern? In trying to subvert the stereotypes, they ended up going in the exact opposite extreme direction, which only served to highlight them. Same with black nerd friends, in desperately trying not to appear racist by making traditional black characters (which used to be gangsters, rapers, athletes, etc) they're making them nerds and saying "see? black people can be smart too", instead of just making them characters (at which point race stops mattering anyway).

There is literally nothing wrong with token characters, be they race or gender related. Whichever majority is working on a property owes nothing to those not involved, I don't expect white man representation in Peele's movies or Bollywood productions.

Nah, all the black characters either go full hip or full Urkel

Demo has way more funny shit going on with him than just being black. He's the Drunk guy not the black guy of TF2.
Same with Irwin when the show reveals that he's part Mummy.

Dear Christ, I hate this little faget. One more reason I prefer Harvey Beaks AND Welcome to the Wayne over the mediocre BS that is TLH.

It would be so much better if Lincoln and Ronnie Anne were BFFs or whatever BS they are, instead, as Ronnie Anne is a much better character TO be friends with in general.

Just one more reason I hate Danny Phantom so damn much, besides everything else... Unpopular opinion? Don't care.

We need more niggas like Riley and Huey Freeman (The Boondocks), not exactly like them, just more dynamic characters on their level and much less annoying nerds.

All these nerdy-ass weebs and their overexposure make me ashamed to be black, more than anything.

We could also use a return to the smart dad character. I don't mind Father Knows Best, because good, smart fathers doing their job? THEY DO KNOW BEST, dammit.
That is definitely something cartoons or any other medium in general could use MORE and MORE of, going forward, not less.

What show is the top left one?

Fucking Based. Real blacks ain't sissies like that, even if they happen to be gay, which most aren't (mostly for good reasons, too.).

Nah, I think you're wrong. We blacks ain't got much love for gays. It's always been like this and something that ain't gonna change anytime soon.

I miss Father Knows Best being an actual thing. Those were actually good times.

grojband

There are a lot of black nerds out there but they aren't complete pussies like they're always portrayed to be, most of the ones I've met are gymbros who are really into Dragon Ball and fighting games.

Not that user, but...
Sashi Kobayashi (Penn Zero: PTH).

...And that's what we need more of in our media, not less.

Yeah, it sucks how afraid people seem to be to portray blacks in a real way, like The Boondocks actually did right.

>we blacks
>ain't gonna change

implying you're black
implying change isn't real
implying

But who have people who are black but didn't grown up in black culture.

So, question: did Irwin always used to say "yo" all the time? I used to remember finding that annoying and being something they added to the character later on

More of a post-Evil Con Carne Thing

You mean "But you have people who are black but didn't grown up in black culture".

>its another WMAF episode
When will this shit end

t. jealous nigga that hates seeing some black with two dad's when he can't even have one of his own.

there was nothing fucking wrong with Tucker. I'll never understand where you niggas come from but god you guys have awful opinions. Always make boondocks threads cringey as shit

>We could also use a return to the smart dad character.

This I can get behind, it'd certainly be refreshing to see a show where the mother is an idiot and the father is one trying to keep things together.

But that's all they love is Dragon Ball because of "Goku is the realest nigga" I wouldn't really classify them as being nerdy if that is the case having all but known and have a deep love for Dragon Ball. I'll say there is a tonal shift and they are hyping up One Punch Man too because Saitama basically trained for three years, got /fit/ and able to beat his opponents flawlessly. If you want to see like actual black nerdiness then maybe go to a anime club or even anime convention. You'll probably experience more with an eclectic taste other than "Dragon Ball". A wreslter in WWE like Dragon Ball, Michael B Jordan like Dragon Ball, Denel Curry like Dragon Ball. It's just so proliferated.

Yeah you're probably right, I'm pretty sure the word "nerd" only applies to fans of niche interests anyway. Dragon Ball and anime in general is mainstream as fuck now.

Yah it's not 1996 anymore, what I think people have to understand it's a 2-way street. Most of the said black nerds don't really a black culture attached to them so it comes off less stereo, thus using it as the 101 standard vs. 80's/90's cartoon Black characters who would rap and play basketball all day.

>tfw your token black friend went to call tech and you're still here working under the yoke of your friends and familie's accomplishments because there's something wrong with you but you don't know what.
Feels bad

Nope. Opinion discarded.

Some one else being BASED around here; feels good, actually

The nice thing about the Loud House spinoff is they couldn't make their token black guy a nerd otherwise he would look like a Clyde clone.

The Botsfords weren't supposed to be black, they were supposed to be racially ambiguous.

>The Botsfords weren't supposed to be black, they were supposed to be racially ambiguous.

Will admit he does look cool. He seems to have a commercial appearance.

Imagine cartoons having such an effect on you that a trope makes you ashamed of yourself. Christ this is said. At least you agree that the wacky dad trope is tiring so their's a brain somewhere in that head.

>Imagine cartoons having such an effect on you that a trope makes you ashamed of yourself

Or to a effect people see you as, It's like you can't win .

If people act truly different and not joking different toward you cause a show for kids has an exaggerated joke then they were retards from the start.

A cartoon can do that?

Because it's a trope in real life. My first college roommate was a total black nerd

Tucker is my least favourite character in Danny Phantom because of how stereotyped he is as the womanising geek in the show and I've seen characters of his kind in other places. Heck, a majority of characters are cliched because of how stereotyped their roles are. It comes off as generic at best. I like the series, but it definitely has some problems that most fans won't admit.

>Said the man who watches loud house

Agreed, Demo being black is like the least interesting thing about his character.

Kind of funny, I had a conversation about black characters in vidya a few months ago, and I was trying to come up examples. And it took me freaking forever to come up with Demoman, despite playing 2k+ hours of TF2 and 150+ with him!

I like him, I'm sick of black men being portrayed as cool constantly, what about the nerdy/sensitive ones? They need representation too

It isn't, wtf? It's rare as fuck, only recently have people finally realized, "Hmm, maybe all black people aren't cool/fly as shit", we needed to balance out the overuse of the cool black person trope from the early 2000s and 90s

I think it was changed because it looked too similar to Cindy's.

Phoebe is BM/AF

meant for
Gerald was just a cool black kid instead of some typical black nerd like all these other shows. They even name their lot after him.

LET THE RACE WAR STAR NOW!

Attached: woolie.gif (300x247, 663K)

>They need representation too
No they don't.

>Lenny = White
>Carl = Black
OK, post checks out

Candace was the real MC of Phineas and Ferb tho

and in Phineas and Ferb the girl's asian sidekick eventually gets together with the guy's black sidekick.

I always felt like gerald wasn't that cool, nigga didn't even know how to ride a bike.

>The only black kid in the inner city school

What alternate universe did Hey Arnold take place in?

I wouldn't blame people for thinking that. her glasses do give the impression of asiatic eyes.

Because portraying them any other way might lead to the show being cancelled, the network being sued, or people raging against the series for being terrible and racist for using a caricature.

They cannot possibly make their character follow any common black guy characterizations because that would inevitably be considered a stereotype. Even positive ones. They cannot be musical, or good at sports because that sends a bad message, they cannot be "cool" or street, cannot be negative in any way like being a bad kid or be mean in any way or else that is portraying all black kids as criminals and bullies. So they are left with "Good Natured Nerd" because no one can make any claims of stereotyping or caricaturing and try to sue the network over it. It's the safest way to have a black face in the crowd and not have anyone lose their shit over it.

Demoman was going to be the stereotypical ginger scotsman until Valve notice that all the cast was white, they didn't forgot to add him a personality and that's why he's great

It started out as the Cliff Huxtable plan. To portray a black character as rich, smart and successful, and therefore inspire black kids to want to grow up rich and successful. But instead became it's own trope and now the random black character MUST be portrayed as the smartest richest one in the cast.

Thumbnail made me think this was a klingon

Looked like my school but I'm in the country

At least post black characters with soul.

What the fuck happened to this dude's character as the show went on. He started as "the nerdy friend" but then they started this "Yo" shit and made him a weird perv.

You're ashamed to be black because all black people aren't portrayed in a manner you like? tf, niggah relax, some of us are annoying ass nerds and wanna see ourselves in the characters we create

I think it's outdated now, not the black nerd itself, but the way they show them, I imagine a black nerd like Etika nowadays

I'll never forget when I went to a con a few years ago and there was a black dude wearing a Fourze driver singing the original Kamen Rider theme at karaoke. I didn't know black people even liked tokusatsu.

Can they be womanizer? Is that a good or bad imagine?

He can't have friends. Won't they disrupt his static field?

He was friends with that white guy with a racist dad

literally just Irwin 2.0

WRONG

So what you're saying is the process of making a good black character is
>design and create a personality for a white character
>at the last second make them black
Seems legit

Aren't you black? Cuz you sound black.

Flanderization, same thing happened with Mandy where she went from "snarky bored kid" to "evil world dominator sociopathic kid".

I feel you black bro

Funny fact, last month that new show Costume Quest came out and it spontaneously featured a black best friend sibling for the male and asian best friend for the female one.

why include connie ? steven isn't a girl

Fandoms and full on series are different than 1-one off movies tho. If you're putting token white/American stereotype characters in an intended drawn out series that's usually pretty dumb.

You're thinking of latinos, who had DBZ aired nonstop in their youth.
Naruto, Bleach, Boku No Hero, HxH, Attack on Titan- a lotta blacks are just straight up shonenfags. Look up all the most common reviewers and react-video types on youtube and it's pretty common.

But Penn, was a boy.

Blackanon here. If that's what's up, then I say it's a good thing that I barely watch the show

Don't be so hard on Clyde he's fine when he's not fan boy-ing over Lori or around his best friend Lincoln, Clyde took care of a egg and he did just fine.

Attached: bcd659beecd01e364a07041c28bfe2186aaeae2d.png (1280x720, 604K)

he's a sentient packet of fries

this is a white man

As a black guy that started making characters based on myself and my friends when I was a kid, with the intent of using them for a cartoon or comic in the future (still a work in progress to this day), I always related more to the white main characters of the shows I watched so I designed my own character as pretty much that kind of character but with his skin colored to match mine yet having hair similar to Timmy Turner or Danny Phantom. But then right after, I made a character based on my cousin, and designed him as the black best friend that's an athlete wearing a basketball jersey and always carrying a ball around, and listens to rap music and stuff.

some guy who made a bunch of cuck comics got a show in canada

No, fuck clyde. Hes too fucking annoying and takes away too much screentime from the sisters
>muh representation
Doesnt matter, fuck off

I'm just a person with black skin, I can't relate to most of these black characters? and I think there needs to be both because like whites there's too many different lifestyles whites and blacks live. Somethings your culture your brought up in becomes your race.

Suck my dick yo.

Attached: knuckles x.png (731x1084, 890K)

>muh representation

What do you want him to do or represent?
can you be black with out acting like it?
I feel that episode was a step in the right direction for him being independent. sure he took to much screen time in the first season but they were focusing on Lincoln and his life so it's natural hiss best friend would be in the mix.

What show is the middle left one?

Sidekicks

So basically, showing black people in any way at all is racist.

I think this started with Peanuts and Franklin. Because Schulz was afraid to depict the character in any kind of way that would offend people, he made him as bland as possible.

Connie is Indian which makes her asian

>Token Black

This

It's because he also received ton of mail from "concerned" people basically shitting on him for including a negro at all. Franklin literally did nothing except sit in a chair in front of Charlie Brown and that set off a lot of racists on Shultz's ass.

The goat

Tfw you watch show for this character
They start using him less and less and eventually write him out of the show

First sign of how shitty Dan Harmon is

When does a black friend stop being token and becomes their own character?

Why is he so hated?

How to blank text

What hurts the most is that him quitting the show took the Troy and Abed dynamic with it so Abed just became a much worse character after he left too.

>the Swede is a literal dwarf
I don't understand this meme. Are swedes supposed to be tall? cause the only sweedish stereotypes I've heard are about refugees

It's honestly not a bad strategy, or at least not a bad starting point. Writers can get too caught up in "How will this come across" in race/gender and forget to make an interesting character.

youtube.com/watch?v=R_z-WQUGF5o

>add him a personality

OTOH there's a LOT of white(/male) characters and sidekicks with zero personality, lord knows writers can write lousy characters without any racial element involved. Are there actually more bland black characters, or do we just notice them more?

Godammit user, I was browsing threads and I cut myself on the edge of your post.

I just remembered the episode where she changed her hair. Literally a WE WUZ KANGS episode lol.

>Started out as Billy's black best friend
>Develops a crush on Mandy for the lulz
>Writers love Irwin so much that they retcon him into Dracula's grandson (fourth-vampire) and half-mummy just so he can remain relevant.
>Was meant to star in a spinoff that never went anywhere because the pilot had shit ratings.

>Black nerdy best friend
>Adopted by multiracial gay couple
>Has an obvious crush on a female character to convince parents watching that 2 dads don't make their kids gay

Virtue signalling the character.

Easily the funniest side character in the show. Having to put up with all of Cartman's racism because he's black. Watching that porno and describing in vivid detail what he watched and developing a cynicism. Nihilistic "straight man" dealing with how fucked up the world is for him because he's black in addition to the various wacky characters in town.

Black best friend that served as Arnold's more vibrant, extroverted, reckless, and egotistical foil. They balance each other out.

>Black best friend and foil to country bumpkin devolves into black nerd stereotype to better contrast with country bumpkin

>An actual good character that served as the most sensitive, honest, moral of Peter's group, punished for his lack of assertiveness and male dominance
>Devolves into black Peter during his spinoff
>Comes back to FG after spinoff failed; now just a walking black stereotype

>When black best friend/nerd meets arrogance and MeToo

Tucker only exists because there aren't any other minorities in Danny Phantom until Val.

>Cindy's foil who is forced into relationship with Jimmy's foil

So much potential wasted.

>A black nerd that actually stands on his own merit instead of being just an add-on to the main protagonist

Ned's Declassified was such a based show.

>Angelica's foil that eventually devolved into walking soul stereotype

Yea, they have to be white people colored black or else someone will be pissed off at the horrible portrayal.
