I'm relatively new to comics, but this fight was better and more enjoyable than most of the fights from most modern Shounen.

Johns literally had Kyle reintroduced as Ion during Infinite Crisis. And then afterwards had Alan Moore's "ultimate Green Lantern" as the next Ion and even used him in Legion of 3 Worlds. Johns is clearly more attached to the concept than you give him credit.
