Build Fighters has the Gunpla concept behind it, hence the "build" part. Transformers are very different from Gunpla, and I don't think you can do anything out of the ordinary here without going full LEGO Movie. Most of the fanservice could be centered around different generations and their quirks (things like build quality, or G1 Arcee not getting any merch whatsoever for 30 fucking years).

I did, but most of it was forgettable and I only read it through Yea Forums storytimes with a drink or two in me.
I remember the Getaway betrayal, all the shit on necroworld, then Atomizer was dead for some reason, then it sorta gets hazy and I cared less and less until some Rom+Micronauts bullshit happened with Unicron and everything ended. It all seemed to stop mattering after a while, and the conclusion felt like an "oh, ok" moment.

Makes sense, as opposed to e.g. Beast Wars names with cybertronian altmodes. BW Prowl aka Dent showed up briefly in IDW, so you can apparently change your name. Misfire's his nickname too, forgot his original name.
He was an asshole but he did have a valid case against Megatron, whereas maybe not in the universe where Hasbro(?) didn't mandate Autobot Megatron.

Costa said that he didn't "get" Transformers; he didn't see how alien robots could have emotions or feelings and felt that they weren't compelling as characters. So Costa's run on Transformers focused almost entirely on human characters he created fighting other human characters he created. When the Autobots and Decepticons did participate, they didn't have personalities. His run is just excruciatingly boring and very, VERY long. He was on the title for several years.

So they put a guy whow knew fuck all about Transformers in charge of writing the Transformers. It doesn't help either that the 'Superstar artist' Don Figueroa turned turncoat on us and began drawing everyone as Bayformers. Figueroa sucks at Bayformers since he gave every single bot the same face and made them unable to emote. Thankfully we had Milne willing to pick up the slack and that dude actually makes Bayformers look good.
Long story short, Figueroa left Transformers forever in part because fans for once were rightfully pissed and in part because management at the time were sketchy fucks. It got better at the end of Costa's run, really.

But they did a Bumblebee prequel that was set to fix the canon...and then Bumblebee was a reboot and the comic (set in the 60's with Bee as a spy for MI6) had no way of ever fitting in anywhere.

Only other thing by Costa I've read are the couple of issues of IDW TMNT he wrote. They're actually not bad, especially the Hun microseries one-shot he did. And I've heard his GI Joe stuff was good, too, but can't confirm.
He was just an absolutely wrong fit for Transformers. He was one of IDW's stock writers at the that time and they rotated him across a bunch of their books (hence Joe and Turtles), so he likely got the gig because he was buddies with editors like Andy Schmidt. Even when it was clear he wasn't a good fit for the title, he kept his job for like 2 or 3 years anyway.

Bay gave the Autobots, at least, a ton of personality and wanted them all to have diverse personas in his movies. Not all the personalities he came up with for them were good (Skids and Mudflap), but he at least understood that just because they were robots, it didn't mean they were mindless machines.
The fact that someone like Bay could pin down that concept but Costa was never able to comprehend it REALLY tells you how limited Costa's imagination is (not a good thing for a fuckin WRITER).

Oh I want to make it clear, his aesthetics are fantastic. He looks phenomenal. The problem is, for me, when it comes to handling it. The best way to describe him would be "Not user friendly".
Now this is definitely something that will vary from person to person. Don't know about you, but when it comes to TF, I really enjoy feeling comfortable picking up a figure and being able to mess with it. Heck, even with the new MP BW Megs, although being delicate in some areas, I feel comfortable transforming him. When it comes to this guy however, the transformation is incredible frustrating and over complicated when it didn't need to be. Not even the majority of it, in fact overall it's pretty simple. It's contorting the robot arms into the body to form the beast torso. It's one of those transformations that you need to twist the elbows in like three different places to get it just perfectly right or it won't secure properly. Now over some time I've gotten the hang of it and it's a bit easier, but those initial attempts to transform him really left a sour taste in my mouth.
Here's how I'd put it. If you only buy figures to put on the shelf and never touch and only look at him (which I want to say I by no means think that's a bad thing to do, different ways of collecting for different folks) then he's great to look at. If you're like me and prefer to occasionally pick up, transform, shift his pose, etc, you'll probably find him more a hassle than worth.

Oh MPM VW Bee is more on that level I tolerate. He kinda mildly suffers the same issue that the Studio Series have, again things needing to feel just right or you get the hood/roof popping up or not securing right. It's mild, but can be a little annoying. But I would still recommend that Bee as I actually rather like it overall.

Never actually held MP36, so not sure about that. After hearing about paint chipping on Transformation I didn't want him so much. I actually got the WeiJiang MegaMaster to stand in for an MP Megs, and I think he's awesome, that even despite the more limited articulation, his transformation is great. But to answer you, not sure. Maybe I'm a bit moody at times. Like I also mentioned, Carnifex's shoulders are a little silly to get into Jet mode but I still really like him. Zeta Bruticus was quite good in my book even despite all the giant parts hanging off of him, but I'm perhaps biased for the final combined mode. And BW Megs, despite getting worried at some of the tabs snapping, I actually love how secure he feels in both modes.

I believe he is yeah. It's weird because he looks like a KO but he's completely unique. Maybe because WeiJiang is commonly known for KOs. But I feel like he has the cleanest back of any of the MP Meg offerings, and I think the transformation is brilliant to have the legs extend into the gun stock rather than have all of it be the handle.
My one downside would be he's very large, not normal MP scale but I don't mind as I wasn't looking for scale, I just wanted a good Megatron figure.

kind of the idea. I thought it would be fun if it was Bumblebee, but he was a decepticon who could take and was actively an asshole for some of the story, before warming up to rex. And Rex is basically Charlie if she had a rebel streak a mile wide.
And instead of the heart wrenching ending in bumblebee, the two of them just look at each other and agree that they're the best friend each of each other has had.

I just watched the Bumblebee movie.
It's not that I didn't like his character, but did they just add Memo because Charlie and Bumblebee felt like a love story?

I havent played the Platinum Games one, but War and Fall are fucking awesome. Controls can be a little weird tho, but you get used to it.
