Captain N partially started life as a short prose story in Nintendo Power called "Captain Nintendo", which would later fuse with a "human kid goes to crazy video game world" idea that they were working on at DiC. However, the deregulated advertisement toy cartoons were coming under heavy scrutiny at the time, so to downplay the fact that Captain N was a 22 minute long commercial for Nintendo brand video games and accessories, the word "Nintendo" is never once said in the show itself.
In universe, the season 2 episode "The Big Game" would finally show that letter on Kevin's jacket stood for "North Ridge High", the high school Kevin attended back in California. He was on the varsity swim team.
