It's obviously to simplify it. Her origin being tied to Mar-Vell in the comics is dated because Mar-Vell hasn't been a living character in decades. He's an important footnote for older fans. She also was just sorta caught in the wrong place, wrong time, there is no agency there at all. At least her being half-Kree gives her some more ties to the Kree besides having known a few. It's just a streamlined origin so new readers have less to think about.
As for her movie origin, it kept a lot of the elements, but making her cause the explosion by choice was the biggest, and best, change. It gives her agency in her own origin, making it a moment of self-sacrifice. Even her going with Mar-Vell was her choice, so it's not even by chance that she is in this risky situation. Carol created the destiny that lead her to her powers, her will guided her to that moment. I imagine the comic origin will somehow again be streamlined or altered to bring in some element of that, but I'm not sure how.

I'm not an old fan but he popped enough in comics during my lifetime to know who he was and he (even though it wasn't technically him) had that Secret Invasion mini. It's what made me want to read about him. So even though he is dead the still pops up in stories wether they are about Carol or not so he is still relevant in the modern comics.
Hell they didn't even need to use the character for the movie (and I kind of wish they didn't) yet they still did and even Feige himself said they were going to explore Mar-Vell's legacy in the upcoming Captain Marvel movies when an interviewer asked about Mar-Vell's kids.
The thing that is kind of funny to me is that in making Carol into Captain Marvel and trying to stirr her away from being his love interest (which she never really was) they tied her more to him. She wears his colors, his insignia, her movie takes from stories that are his, and hell as the narrative started focusing more on Carol even when she was Ms Marvel they started making him HER love interest. It kind of threw me off when they were being all lovey dovey in "Life of Captain Marvel" especially since Mar-Vell's own love interest was Una . He made a vow to be faithful to her which he kept and when she died he didn't get over her until he met Elysius and that's when he started even thinking about the possibility of being in love with another person.
I remember that in Claremont's run it's explicitly mentioned she gets her powers from the Psyche-Magnitron and the negabands. Makes some kind of sense since Mar-Vell himself doesn't have powers but relies on the negabands (this was also before he got cosmic awareness).

I don't read comics, but I did see this movie. overall its pretty forgettable, as the only time Carol is 'knocked down' is when she 'is holding herself back' by 'not showing emotion' during the second sequence in the movie.
I know this whole thread is bait, but only cause it successfully attacks a weakness, which is the relatable part, as that is what all humans seek to overcome. but carol doesn't really demonstrate any weaknesses during the movie. which makes her unrelatable outside of narcissists.
