Early American Sonic media had the series take place on a planet named "Mobius" rather than Earth barring the comics which had the plot twist that Mobius was post-apocalyptic Earth. That was dropped around Sonic Adventure, only for Sonic X to use a similar idea with the show premise stemming from Sonic and Pals being warped to Earth. Izuka eventually revealed that the Sonic X take is now effectively canon and the series takes place across two worlds: Earth and Sonic's World. That's partially why Humans don't appear in Sonic Forces and vice-versa for Unleashed. tl;dr: Sega is a joke.
