Bullshit I don't think 90s animators who worked for movies, Saban cartoons, DC and Warner Brothers cartoons ever attended California's meme college. Cal Arts was exclusively a shitty meme college for Cartoon network.

Most animators i've spoken to will tell you the animation matters more than the artwork.

Cartoons were originally for adults. Disney is the reason people think they're for kids.

The 60s and 70s animators cannot shit on the 90s and 2000s animators, not even the 80s animators.

Then speak to the animators who are naturally humble and honest enough to tell you that the artwork matters more.

As someone who doens't draw, doesn't watch cartoons too much, and don't consider myself as a big cartoon critic, I'd say I don't have a big problem with calArts if not for the fact it's being used where it should not be.
in shows like Gumball, WBB, and OKKO(which, from watch I watched, are good enough), it makes sense to use calArts because the show is trying it's best to look "cute" while also having most of it's production focus being it's actual writing of jokes and characters instead of its animation, meanwhile, cartoons like Thundercats and Teen Titans should use a more sophisticated artstyle in order to conform to the fact that it's also portraying action and detail in character expression and scenes. I'm not saying it's impossible to do these in calArts, I'm just saying it's BETTER to not do it in it, specially when animation quality is one of the selling points of the show(action cartoons should, at least by my opinion, sell themselves on the quality of the action they present before anything else).

so, really, I just think they're simply shoving it into where it shoudn't be.

I've got this theory that Adventure Time's success and influence is at least in part linked to the 2008 Recession. Nick and Disney were more or less able to coast through this time off of the popularity of iCarly/Hannah Montana/etc tween sitcoms and didn't need to revolutionize animation, but CN Real failed hard and the network was likely looking for something that was both cheap to animate and not more of the same old same old. When Adventure Time not only filled those requirements but went on to become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon, it made total sense to greenlight more shows using similarly fluid/round animation.

It only used to save money. It very much deserving of the negative criticism it receives. Ironically, adult swim shows like aqua teen hunger force, space ghost, sealab 2021 and squidbillies are some of my most favorite shows ever made and they have notoriously low animation due to having low budgets.

Worst part is if you want to make something more adult then you literally have nowhere to monetize it so you better be working a 2nd job/be millionaire.

Doubt it. First of all, only star vs and SU use pastels, and SU is fucking packed with cold colors. Most cartoons now are colored the exact same way they were back in the 2000s

Nobody chooses to write bad user. But I can definitely see the latter happening. A big part of 90s cartoons was to deliberately avoid the morals that 80s cartoons were required by law to teach, and it carried over to the 2000s

I actually don't hate CalArts style. I honestly find the secondary seething over it to be far more obnoxious. It's an animation trend of the current era. In about 5 years, it'll be different in some other degree, based on any new iconic show that comes out at the time. Success is imitated.
There are legitimate criticisms in the industry baked into the complaints about the "CalArts style" but most of the shit that fill threads up revolve around everyone circle jerking over it being "lazy" or "soulless", which is hardly an original complaint after the 100th guy says it.
Some animation industry person actually made good points regarding this on her blog a few years back. I'd also add that a lot of the industry reaction is also annoying but for different reasons entirely.

The difference is that the late 90s to early-mid 2000s had that the popular shows had more variety in their art styles.

You had the Tartakovsky/McCracken/Hartman style, but also the styles of Murray, Hillenburg, Bartlett, Klasky Csupo, Antonucci, Dilworth, Warburton, Renzetti and Davis.

Now, most cartoons do look the same.
