Historically Hispanics in California actually voted for Republicans, and had similar party splits to the white population of the US when taken as a whole. California passing Proposition 187 in 1994, which was later struck down in courts, pissed off the Hispanic population there so much that they went solid blue, and events there created a national trend. If you look at county by county voting in CA before 1994, even counties with large Hispanic populations typically voted Republican. Hell in the 1988 election the handful of counties that had majority Hispanic populations along the border were pretty damn red, and only barely went blue in 1992 due to Ross Perot splitting the Republican vote. He's not doing alright by those who wanted a wall though. He was going to sign the bill that didn't include a wall in December, then changed his mind when conservative voices started speaking up against him and he could see 2020 slipping from him, so he did a 180 and said he'd own the shutdown, held a meeting where he passed out candy, started with a clear non-starter, walked out, and blamed the democrats for the shutdown. Republicans even told dems to get back into the room their guy walked out of. Fucking bizarre. At the end of it, he got a little more than the deal the dems initially proposed, but with more fucked up immigration policy that had /pol/ seeing Trump as a race traitor while he insists that the wall is already being built, semantics he hinged on too late for it to not be awkward.

The latest where he threatened Mexico with a complete border shutdown was a shallow attempt to court those dissatisfied with him on this issue, if not to smokescreen how he went from talking up making good on his repeal and replace Obamacare promise to saying he has a plan, he just needs to wait until after 2020 to reveal it.
