Andrew Dobson claims that the only reason he isn't a successful Disney animator today is because Treasure Planet killed the market for 2D. Is he right?

I thought Tangled killed it

Animator or cartoonist?

He’d have to animate something first

A variety of factors actually:
>Failures of 2D features like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Spirit, and Sinbad
>Critical acclaim of Pixar's features
>Financial boon of Shrek
>2D market permeated by adaptations of TV shows (Rugrats, Recess, etc.) with slightly above TV-quality animation

And above all else, Dobson cant animate.

I'll agree when he learns how to draw.

No. 3D is just slightly more lucrative and easier to utilize. As an example, The Princess and the Frog according to stats from 2009 both made back its money ($207 million) but UP ($735.1 million.) made more. I'm not saying the Princess and the Frog killed 2D either, but its clear that Disney as per usual follows the money no matter what assets they trample over to get it.

The 2d animation isn't what cost all the money with Treasure Planet, so no.

There are plenty of successful Disney animators.
Not working on any theatrical releases but their cable shows seem to be doing alright.
It's not like traditional 2d animation is dead.

No it was doomed the moment flash shifted to the main interest of LA studios and production circa 2000.

No, Treasure Planet was begged for by it's creators, and then Disney suicided it to "prove" that 2D was dead. The Princess and the Frog was similar.

Its dead for the theatrical business at least, but with Spiderverse doing as well as it did and using a bunch of 2D elements I feel a bit of a renaissance coming on maybe

no. plain and simple, the dude's art is sub-par
it gets even worse when you realize he went to a decent uni for art

Dobson isn't a successful animator because he's a creepy asshole.

he wanted to be both apparently
his degree was in animation

he did and they were just okay

funny how they advertised it like retards and put it up against both the first harry potter movie & their own santa clause movie

>Those darn dirty TROLLS are out to get me!!!

o i am laffin

Figures the guy who drew this comic would end up being the one who doesn't understand the concept of personal space

I remember that incident.
Grud bless that brave Yea Forumsmrade.

And HBG isn't balding despite only being 26.

It would be better for everyone- especially for Dobby- if he just fucking killed himself.

Dob being Dob, he'd fail at it.

I claim people only care about Dobson because his shit was really big for a while. He's the Arin Hanson of comics; a run of the mill douchebag with more fame and influence than he deserves. If we all stopped talking about him now, literally nobody would even know who he is

>2D market permeated by adaptations of TV shows (Rugrats, Recess, etc.) with slightly above TV-quality animation
That’s never been a problem in Japan. Literally every year they release a new Pokémon movie, Doraemon movie, Detective Conan movie, etc, and they always make money.

2D is not dead. It's just people don't pay to see it, and they're usually really boring films.

If that's true, then Bob Chipman would be a famous movie director, rather than an overly biased movie critic.

>wants to give advice to younger artists

Like how friday is McDonalds night?

Just imagine how many young artists have been deprived of Dobson's invaluable paintbucket tutelage because of the trolls silencing him!

Of course he's not. The only reason is probably really complicated, but definitely has something to him being an ambitionless immature manchild.

But it's not exclusively a Dobson problem.

Normies spout dumb factually wrong shit they know nothing about all the time (like "Batman never killed in the comics"), but they get away with it because they have enough charisma/reputation to get away with it.

The only way Dobson is different from them is that he has no charisma/reputation. In fact, he's extremely obnoxious and a lot of his comics just blatantly say "YOU ARE WRONG I AM RIGHT". Nobody likes being talked to that way. So people are going to nitpick everything he does extra hard, because he brought it on himself.

I suppose, factually, it could be considered sort of bullying. Like, when in school, you're all dumb 12-year old fucks, but you have that one autismo kid who just doesn't fit in, so you almost automatically expect to mock everything they say, even if it's technically not wrong/ridiculous.

I.e. potentially, if a normie said "BTAS came before TDKR", they probably wouldn't be mocked too much for it. But because Dobson said that, everyone still mocks him for it to this day.

Ignorance is the norm I suppose, but some people just have a better way of hiding their ignorance. I don't know exactly how much of it is the fault of Dobson himself, but I know for a fact that his reputation is at the bottom and nowadays nothing he says will ever be taken seriously.

In the last thread, someone posted his portfolio and student animations. Some were actually pretty good. If he had stuck with it and put out something short every now and then he'd be more respected.

>The only reason
the real reason*

This is right, in a sense. It's like the difference between light novels and paper back fiction. Light novels can be complete fucking garbage to wider audiences and to big literary critics, but to weeb niche they are great. Finding your audience is an aspect of marketing your idea. Something doesn't have to be good to be popular.

But then he wouldn't be around for me and my friends to make fun of.

Dude's cringy as hell, but he does have "potential". Half his problems are because he didn't get off his lazy ass to work on it.

Imagine staking your career on people buying your product while also being physically incapable of understanding what makes people buy products.

Here's his newest comic.

But he did get to work. I know other artists who are talented but don't go through that first hurdle of putting yourself out there after college. They do fun things for themselves or others, but never attempt to develop a following or try to get known. Dobson, as bad as his ideas and opinions are, works more than most. If he worked harder and kept up with animating something every once in a while he could show people that he didn't just go to college to be a web comic personality.

Looks like it went over well

Threadly reminder that SIXTEEN PEOPLE give him money on patreon so he can poorly trace movie posters in black and white and put them next to typo-ridden soapbox rants.
