The problem with modern female characters is that writers are too wary of being misogynistic and alienating SJWs who get all their comic book information from headlines to write them in the superhero genre. So, instead, they just keep writing them superhero-adjacent, going on wacky SoL adventures, befriending aggressively diverse casts of millennials and only occasionally being actual heroes. Carol Danvers quite honestly has fuck and all going for her in terms of personality and now in terms of visual iconography because of the costume change and bland actress choice.

Women can not pull off the same kind of screen chewing gravitas as men. No matter how hard they try to mimic men. It's just not going to work.

...I'm kind of an outsider to all this but Carol seems to have had *really* shit stories during Marvel's golden age up until Rogue siphoned her powers. She was out of the loop for god only knows how long and in recent years her stance during Civil War II was universally despised by the audience.

She has the opposite problem of the *other* Captain Marvel-- while Shazam vanished for years his comics were still universally praised or at least fondly remembered for their whimsy and charm. Carol has an awful rape situation and at least two depowerment plots as some of her most well known stories.

Now, I really liked the movie? I felt that it worked on all the levels it was reaching for (aside from the scene at the end where she inadvertently inspired Nick Fury to use the Avenger name) and never laughed harder during a Marvel film than when she fucking launched Jude Law into the distance.

However alot of Marvel fans probably associate her with all of the bad baggage, see Bad Baggage The Character getting a huge push,(putting aside the reason for this is because Tony, Cap and Thor's actors ain't sticking around much longer) on top of that see this huge push and a rebranding of the character into a feminist icon that wasn't well liked and they push back against it.

Never mind that this is exactly what they did with Iron man in the movies after the FIRST Civil War event (which nobody liked either, especially some of its repercussions,) but I digress...

..I meant that Iron man was rebranded in general, not rebranded into a feminist icon.

...Though there is Ironheart, I suppose.

Iron Man was before all this culture war cancer had really set in and Marvel was nowhere near the moneymaker it is now. I'm not going to say you're wrong about the actual disgruntled fans or readers, but a lot of the noise is more political and outrage farming than people that actually care about the movie or the character getting upset at its success.

If the costume has to be overwrought then the character wearing it isn't interesting and the potential for cosplay and artists to draw it is cut to nothing. Meaning a completely dead fandom who can't participate.
They DEPEND on simple costumes and easy things to draw to build up a micro community of cosplayers and artists.
