I liked the way he was used in American Alien, and to a lesser extent in S-TAS. How he was used in Earth One's second volume is a perfect example of taking the character too far, which is one of the criticisms I would level against Morrison towards how he was used (albeit comic relief) in All Star. There needs to be limits to what his power means, just as even the people who win those carnival food (hotdogs, etc.) eating contest couldn't manage that feat day in and day out, there would be limits to how much he could absorb and still be a humanoid form.
He's a perfect example of someone who shouldn't have been used once Reign was over, or once Coast City imploded. There is no real justification for him to be able to imitate Superman's power, especially if there are going to be things like clones in the canon.
Sure, if he's going to go against Superman, he would need a comparable skill set, but really he just another 'Bizarro/Superboy as a weapon/Ultraman' and that's excessively tedious and unnecessary.

That was my big problem with his Action Comics run during Rebirth, especially with his OC that he carried over from the post convergence Lois & Clark maxi series. No one else will ever use that guy if he's not writing it.
Metallo was used a lot in the digital first Adventures of Superman, I have to find one but they were pretty good stories told by people who normally do not write super hero books or normally write Superman.
