This is a real instance of a legacy character being ruined by politics. Riri was never good to be ruined, it was a stillborn idea. Kamala's solo started as a legitimately fun read that got some natural tract, but Marvel decided to use her as a mouthpiece for their agenda in every single book she appeared in outside of the solo.

No character is ruined by politics. Characters are ruined by poor writing. You could take any political viewpoint and make an interesting character with good enough writing. I wish we could just accept good legacy characters and ignore bad ones instead of talking about the author's motive.

We could live in a world where we adore Jaime and Kamala and Dick just like Clark and Diana and Steve. We could let characters like Hal and Barry go instead of clinging desperately to them and also let characters like Miles and Riri pass if they're a bad fit. We could not undo Oracle because brand recognition but also let Cass move on when her story is over. We could see Peter Parker become a father or die alone and still enjoy new stories written about the good old days while allowing Kaine or Miguel or Mayday swing around with the Avengers.

Kamala is actually fun when she isn't being used as a political mouthpiece playing lip service to liberal ideas in other character's comics. She's a dorky kid that writes fanfics of heroes whom she gushed over, fights crime, and doesn't get hung up on racial, religious, or gender identity politics. The few time any of those things do come up in her solo runs the writers at least try to make it somewhat organic rather than just hamfistedly shoving it into people's faces like they did with Riri and Jane Thor.

Because in this case it's not turning a blind eye, it's placing utility over author intent. Who cares why a character is created? What matters is if they work or not.

They sell poorly because they are poorly written. It has nothing to do with “Muh SJW”. You can make a character with any background or political motivation interesting through writing.
