Why are the Gorillaz an anomaly? Why don't more animated bands exist, especially since Gorillaz proved the formula could be successful and not some gimmick, Alvin and the Chipmunk thing?

There HAVE been a lot of cartoons about bands. They just don't seem to catch on for some weird reason.

Studio Killer's exists. But Gorillaz had the benefit of having two creative geniuses behind it who were willing to get experimental and were on the same page with what they wanted to create. It was lightening in a bottle.

I think Japan has created similar with idol anime. And K-On. But the J-pop scene is primed for that the way the western music scene isn't.
