This. Doc and Mharti is hilarious. The pilot episode of R&M is pretty good execution at trying to make Roiland humor "structured", but once the show decided to put it in with "feels" like the Jellybean King, it very, very gradually descended into just being another cartoon instead of a product made by a very specific mind with a specific brand of humor.

The latter is more niche, sure, but I feel like fans of niche things will stick around way longer. I mean, shit, look at Invader ZIM.

I went back and watched it a second time a few days ago. Honestly it's a lot funnier when you realize it's the equivalent of a web animation.

I agree with your post, but a lot of people didn't mind the "feels" because the instances of humor were still just as funny. I think a bigger problem is when the humor itself downgraded.

The problem was that they added characterization to Rick that was completely unnecessary. Rick works when he's a bumbling, alcoholic mad scientist who cluelessly puts his grandson in danger with his science. When you have him be a depressed alcoholic demi-god that is fully aware of his actions, it just becomes disturbing how willing he is to risk Mory's life for his adventures. Bushland adventures nailed this point on the head when Rick screams that he's going to kill himself and Morty.

You nailed it right on the fucking head my friend. I'd be okay with the whole depressed alcoholic side of Rick's character if it was more subtle and used as a way to make him a little more sympathetic but don't go crazy with it, like one episode like Auto-Erotic Assimilation per season.

I prefer Rick being a super intelligent but still bumbling idiot mad scientist that always gets himself and others in trouble with harebrained scientific escapades, I feel Pickle Rick was the closest thing we've gotten to an episode like that since season 2, the problem is that he should've turned himself into a pickle just because he can since that's something pre-season 3 Rick would've done, rather then to get out of therapy.
