I dunno about "wacky", but he was originally a bit of both cute and cool before he got "Burgerfied." I do agree that SatAM was a pox on this series because it lead to a LOT of autism in the fanbase. It also introduced the notion that Sonic should have "serious" or "darker" plots, which was solidified when Sonic Team had the bright idea to also introduce that with SA1, but then especially with SA2. Sonic should never have serious plots. It can have serious moments, but overall it should be kept light like a Saturday morning cartoon. Unleashed was basically the best example of how to get a Sonic plot right in the tone department, if nothing else. Anything more than that is destined to be a complete shitshow.

If you desperately want a Sonic story, read the comic. Let the games be games first.

Not OP who is legit screeching but the lack of actual adventure did turn me off from Boom. That and the lack of characters from the modern Sonic cast. What really burns the most is how you guys act like Boom was good, not just good but better than all other sonic series solely on the merit it's "self-aware', "meta", and dare I say "woke". Unpopular opinion: I like Boom and the modern games, but I prefer the modern games a bit since I can respect their sincerity in going with darker plots while Boom's self-aware, ironic nature is something that I've gotten a bit tired of if that makes any sense.

X was just squandered potential - first season was monster of the week crap with the mandatory token kids usually getting more screentime. There were some good parts (Knuckles episodes, that bit in SA2 where the old soldier remembers gunning down a child, the last season except for Dark Sonic ) but the rest was cookie-cutter anime for the kids

The final battle in Doomsday Zone in Sonic 3K was serious and cool though. Also the intro of Sonic Unleashed and the whole tone of that game is what I want. I see where you’re coming from. I enjoyed Boom as someone who likes Sonic but doesn’t take him seriously. But I admit that there were points where I thought, “shouldn’t a Sonic cartoon have more fast paced action, or at the very least exploration?”
I know that as a 3D show, it’s limited in its ability to deliver, but Boom felt too often like it was “Sonic and friends bored on vacation.” The jokes were good, but for such an animated character, Sonic did jack shit up until the obligatory fighting Eggman’s robots scene. The action sequences were also pretty shit, to be honest.
Still, this beats SatAM or Underground. Unless it’s the Tamers version of Underground.

I admit the show had a very dry humor that was obviously poking fun at the franchise as a whole as well as some of the less "stable" fans, but it still had its moments.

Mostly I'm disappointed they ran out of ideas for Sticks so early on. That and I never was able to warm up to the new designs, they feel so Fireball20xl.

Oh well, Sonic Boom as a franchise is good and dead, lets move on.

I feel like people who praise/criticize Boom for being largely "meta" or "self-aware" have never really watched the show an instead are just reacting to images or clips that are regularly posted when the show is brought up. The show has a lot of instances and characters that are funny and would still be even if the show wasn't Sonic-related.

Of course I've also found that a lot of autists didn't like Boom largely because a lot of its humor was "mean-spirited", so whatever.

SA1's plot isn't any more serious than S3K's, especially Sonic's story (that's mostly just "I gotta stop Eggman again") which makes up 60% of the game. SA2 is when the writing started getting stupid by having neon rubberhose characters on the run from the police and getting involved with government conspiracies.

I'll give you all of those except Wave, Wave is a one-note bitch who doesn't deserve any praise.

It's plot being consciously simple was really a blessing in disguise, because it meant Sonic Team didn't bother implementing some of the stupid shit they tend to include in some of their more narrative-focused games (e.g. the Black Arms in Shadow, Mephiles in 06, Sonic and Chip's predictable relationship in Unleashed, Infinite in Forces, etc.)
