I remember seeing this in the stores when it was released, 1996 maybe? I thought the art was truly a cut above and loved the way superman was drawn like a heavy-set, mature man. By that time supes had become this youthful bodybuilder with 0% bodyfat and he was long past boring due to godlike power. Frank Miller fucked everything up but at least moved it along by making capeshit 'serious'. After that every superhero had to be mildly BDSM in appearance or they looked weak.

Stop equating realism with quality. Ross is an astounding watercolorist but a terrible cartoonist, his books look like a sucession of photographs or storyboards, not comics.

I think he's pretty good. Dude is crazy talented and can draw many different styles. He just has his own and mainly sticks to it.

Again, knowing how to draw isn't being a good cartoonist. His stuff looks very posed and stiff and you can clearly see in that (very nice) picture (which I saved btw) how everything is kinda static. He's very good at organizing things but his compositions and layouts are just the bare minimum he needs to have so he can do his realist stuff.
Again, not a bad artist, but knowing how to draw doesn't mean you also know how to make good comics, just good drawings.

There's something about Ross' stuff that sets him apart from other artists who have a photorealistic style. Ross is able to depict a person wearing a superhero costume that doesn't look like some shmuck in his pajamas.

obviously being a good cartoonist is extremely complicated, but you shot yourself on the foot with that phrasing. "Drawing" pretty much sums up all kind of illustration, don't act like you know youe shit and actually use proper language if you're gonna be a fucking contrarian and act like Alex Ross isn't one of the best artists in the comic industry

I'm not being a contrarian you fucking dolt, this is a pretty fair judgement on my part.
I don't even think he's a bad artist, just a bad cartoonist. To make an obvious example, nothing Ross does looks even remotely as exciting and action packed as Captain American #1, and Jack Kirby could barely draw a face back then.
Just look at this, it looks like a fucking roadside show from the 40s instead of a real fight between a ubermensch showing that little german asswipe what he thinks about nazism.
It's very competent art, but it's still tacky and very static. Again, I like his art, but I wouldn't even hang a cheap fucking poster of his in my wall, it looks very good but it falls away very quick if you constantly have to deal with it.
