He wasn't a moron, he just wasn't as smart as he thought he was. Backstabbing Aladdin after he retrieved the lamp probably seemed like a good idea at the time, the plan to steal the lamp worked without a hitch, and really, wishing to become a genie wasn't that bad of an idea either, Jafar's only mistake was not wishing to be an all-powerful FREE genie.

Jafar's wish was to make it so that he could use magic. That's fucking brilliant; it basically gives him ungodly powers outside of the genie's grasp.
His last wish isn't even bad, I mean who the fuck said genies have to be trapped inside a lamp? It's supposed to be a coincidence. A lamp even appears out of nowhere. The genie just wanted to fuck him over like they always do; it's in their nature.
