O'Neil didn't do that much detective stuff desu. His Batman was more of the globetrotting James Bond type. Which is equally as valid a theme for Batman if you ask me.

he was both user, he investigated mysteries by locating clues which allowed the reader to follow along and give him a chance reach a logical conclusion before or at the same time as Batman did
nowadays batman writers are just memeing detective stuff, just look at detective comics#10000 where there wasn't a single detective story, just batman jumping from one lead to another without any explanation or reasoning

One of the things I've always thought was cool about Batman was how versatile he is. He can fit so many roles, from gritty noir detective to global superspy/ninja, while still being the same character.
