That is because havibg to make an all ages story forces writers to be clever or at least economical with their storytellling. Some restraints are good. For a questionable example, when Roland Emmerich was given alarge but not ridiculously so 75 million dollar budget back in 1995-1996 he made Independence Day, a well loved popcorn flick if there ever was one. Once he was given all the money in the world ge made the sequel Resurgence and tooo much money meant too much excess and thus a far worse movie. Compare the fist Matrix with it's quaint 60 million dollar budget to its sequels or the 180 million dollar Jupiter Ascending.

I think another reason is any story that would make for a legitimately good adult animation can just as easily be toned down into something for general audiences, so for the sake of a wider audience that's what they end up making.

I have no idea what that movie is, so I looked up a trailer of it. It looks like they made an animated version of something that could have been easily done in live action. Animation is generally not taken seriously. Kid's entertainment is, by a small group of people, and so "kid's animation" can actually get away with good storytelling. Adults aren't supposed to care, for some reason.

I really enjoyed this movie. The humor was hit and miss but some scenes were pretty funny and the message about how absolute dogmas (such as those found in religion) sprout from our inability to deal with our inevitable demise as individuals was spot on. The way the products created a cult to the humans and how it mutated in so many different forms in different aisles felt exceptionally organic.

This is why anime pisses me the fuck off. Yeah there's some great stuff conceptually here and there but it's riddled with shit like this even in "serious" programs. Oh, and characters saying what's plain as fucking day to the audience. And don't give me that cultural shit, it's just bad writing. On the other hand, it's also why western animation pisses me off. We know that shit's horrible and despite the state of the industry, there really are fantastic animators and storytellers who come together make stuff that blows most japshit out of the water. We KNOW we can excel whatever they put out whenever we goddamn please but the industry is just stuck in this self fulfilling cycle of mediocrity and not enough people are rejecting that mediocrity for true change to happen.
If I had to pick two of three following three things in entertainment, sexuality, violence, and offensive jokes/stereotypes/material/etc., I'd opt to have the violence and offensiveness; The both can actually be entertaining, the former can actually contribute to the plot, and the latter, despite what crybabies say, is funny.
