Someone already said it, but people like Cartman, to an extent Boo and Peggy are all supposed to be unlikable and they can still be funny despite their unlikeability because the writers purposefully put these bad characters in weird situations that makes their shtick entertaining to watch.

Lisa Simpson and Steven Universe are supposed to be likeable according to the writers yet they come off as preachy and unlikeable, and the show doesn't really do much to really stand against their case because the writers genuinely think these characters are supposed to be likeable.

Didn't the porn episode occur after the episode where Peggy discovered one of her most cherished memories was based on a lie Hank told her in order to get out of explaining why he had Mono? I mean, yeah she would probably assume Hank doesn't rent porn but if he fibbed about one thing...

Peggy turned into a shitty person, but I can't help but feel sorry for her. She went from an odd/eccentric but overall pleasant wife who was a softball foil to Hank but also the 'protagonist' against Cotton's bullshit since nobody else would stand up to him.

And then four seasons later, she's dealt with humiliation after humiliation, been mocked, made to feel inadequate in many categories including the ability to have more children; to top it all off she then fucking falls out of a plane as her skydiver instructor doesn't do shit to help save her.

Peggy *snapped*, is what I'm saying and while she did sort of go from being a foil to an outright antagonist, I can't entirely blame her. It's not like with Lisa Simpson whose writing quality just utterly degraded as the show zombified; there was a clear path that Peggy's character took despite some minor retcons about her awful family.

Kyle is the Yin to Cartman's Yang. They are both two sides of the extremes. Stan provides a voice of reason, and Kenny is a utility character to be used for any reason as necessary, up to and including killing him. It's not difficult to see the simple Dynamics and why they work.

Latter day Lisa and Peggy are awful, but I'm quite fond of their original characterization in the early seasons of their shows. They're both still self-absorbed, but they're also much more human and relatable. Lisa is a smart, nervous kid who's plagued by self-doubt, loneliness, and a general frustration with not being able to truly connect with most people. Peggy is a smart, shrewd lady who has a bit of an ego and is sometimes distracted by her own eccentricities but is ultimately a loving parent to both Bobby and Luanne, who she repeatedly protects, nurtures, and teaches. She also proves to be more open-minded relative to the highly traditional Hank, who sometimes becomes inflexible in situations where his usual strategies fail him.

It's shocking to me how different Lisa and Peggy become. It's to the point where they may as well be completely different characters. The Peggy who stood up to Luanne's deadbeat mom would be aghast at the behavior of the bitter, delusional monster who ruins Thanksgiving and lashes out at her family out of spite.

This is a pretty solid choice. New "wacky" characters who are introduced while a show is on its deathbed are almost guaranteed to be awful, and Lucky certainly was due to being a one-note joke character who made Jar Jar Binks tier remarks about slippin' in the pee pee.

That's a very fun quality compared to most recent appearances.
