Loved this fucking show as a kid. I used to watch that stupid Super Mario show just so I could catch the clips at the end what awaited for me Friday.

Now I'm not going to defend the show saying it's some great masterpiece. But it did do something NO other cartoon did at the time...it starred a teenage girl and boy that, honestly, acted exactly like a teenage girl and boy.

Teenage boys have sports. Link had competing with Ganon (he wasn't even really interested in completely beating him as he knew his usefulness would be over if he ever did). But what he wanted most was to make out with the hot girl. And like every guy I knew at the time, he almost always went about it the wrong way. Pushy, unromantic, constantly trying to barter his way into it (I'll do this if you kiss me) which basically is treating Zelda like a whore. But he also proved to be reliable; he even came back to rescue her after she completely dumped him for a hot prince she just met.

As for Zelda, was pretty much reminded me of many hot girls in school (both the good and bad). Caring, hard-working, responsible, etc. But she was also pushy (one episode is just her forcing Link to help her clean the castle and another she goes off half-cocked into Ganons lair with no real plan), bitchy, and basically acted like what you'd expect how an actual princess would behave. As mentioned, she completely dumps Link for this Prince which, honestly, is what most hot girls would do. But before you start shouting slut, Link literally flirted with several girls and even once made out with a hot girl RIGHT IN FRONT OF ZELDA. So come on...be fair. However, one episode actually showed if Link put any effort into the romance, he'd have her. Like when he brings her to this nice picnic area and she literally jumps on top of him telling him to shut up and make out (in a kid's show no less!).

It was honestly a very realistic show from a teenage boy/girl perspective.

It is actually that bad. It's one of those shows that is 'so bad, it's good'. I did find it better than most of the Mario cartoons and Captain N. There were some decent moments in the show. It's far from being my favorite animated adaption of a video game, but it isn't the absolute worst. Coming from someone that isn't a Zelda fan, the show is pretty okay.

Personally, I want a Zelda show set between the first two games, going on the aftermath of Classic Link’s victory over Ganon in the first game. It is a pretty much a blank spot in the Zelda timeline, which gives it reason for needing some events happening and plenty of freedom with what to do. It would also be a good chance to have Classic Link and Zelda interact. It should be At least someone interesting to see Zelda, a princess born with a silver spoon in her mouth, try to figure out what to make of this strange stoic wild child who could very well have never even seen a spoon before in his life, and was either brave, stupid, or mad enough to be traveling alone in a time where civilized areas are few and far between and dangers abundant, and yet had singlehandedly saved her and her entire kingdom from oblivion, and was likely even more dangerous an opponent than all of her most experienced veteran soldiers combined.

Even if Ganon is stuck respawning there could still be plenty of troubles for Hyrule in the form of bandits, monster bands, corrupt scheming lords, dickhead wizards, and other such things. It would leave room for a nice bit of diversity in the roster.

Lore-wise, sure. But there were certainly some things about it that were understandably bothersome to some people. The sitcom-like way Link always tried to get a kiss was either hit or miss for some people, and I can get how some character designs weren't liked for one reason or another. Link's case was mostly a tiny niggle about his hair, but Ganon looked like an entirely different entity from what people knew of him in the NES games. Still, it is funny that Nintendo let that (and the Mario movie) take such a long time before considering letting the IP have another go at a TV adaptation.

As for the spirit thing, that is a factor because Ganon questions if he has it, before figuring that the Link before him isn't the same one he faced years ago.

He's saying that Link has come to embody the same spirit that OoT Link, not that he's OoT reborn directly, since that would be impossible given the time travel shit removing him. And so what if the Hero's spirit isn't all that sensible? It's in the fucking games, deal with it.

The point is that if even the series it applies to doesn’t make an effort to adhere to it’s rules up, it’s a pretty clear indicator that it’s probably not really relevant to canon anymore and is just being quietly forgotten, if not explicitly retconned.

Depends on the games. Most Links have proven that even with their "chosen" status, they're still acting of their own will or just that nice of a guy to not pack it all up and leave even when in the case of SS Link he could have taken issue with how his entire life was basically decided centuries before his own birth.

The last game to use it was Twilight Princess, which wasn't that long ago, and even then, the newer games still make a huge deal about Link having a stronger spirit than others, they're just being more vague so the newer Links can stand out better rather than get crowded under the shadow of the "spirit" hubbub.

Well it is a video game after all, not like it has to be super strict about its rules if it doesn't want to. Nintendo has stated before that while they do have placements for the games, they're always open to shifting or swapping games around if it sounds interesting. This goes doubly for the locations, hence why in most of the 2D games, the Lost Woods were always in the north, but then many of the 3D games had them towards the south. Nintendo pretty much likes to be fast and loose with the timeline, while still trying to build some grand tapestry spanning multiple timelines/universes. It's pretty much a case of them wanting their cake and eating it too despite the problems that will arise.

But that’s true. You say this like it’s outlandish or inconcievable for small details of long narratives or stories to end up retconned or ignored if they turned out not to be quite as good as they initially thought. It’s a common thing, and doesn’t require nearlly as many mental gymnastics as trying to justify something that gets contradicted that often.

I didn't though. All I said was that quite a few games made a big deal about Link possessing the spirit, and how it was mostly just a fancy way of saying "You've been chosen to be the hero and so you embody courage and resilience". It's true that after SS, they haven't bothered with the spirit nonsense since LBW only makes some slight nods to the events of LttP (not to mention the Link from that game is very likely still alive), and BotW only makes some vague mentions of Link possessing a willpower that hasn't been seen in any knights of the kingdom in many years.

How does it contradict what I said? I said the spirit is just the embodiment of Link's courage and all that, not his actual soul. OoT Link appearing as a ghost is basically like Roku appearing to Aang, since they both have their own souls. And it doesn't necessarily mean they're blood related at all, it's certainly implied, but even the Historia book is kind of dodgy about saying outright if the two Links are related. Though given the context of the Shade's dialogue and what little backstory is given in TP and Historia, it's pretty fair to say they're definitely related even if Nintendo is being vague so they can pull a possible retcon out of their ass.

It means that some Links are explicitly chosen, and others aren't. Japanese love all that mumbo jumbo about destined fates and spirits given their almost fetishistic outlook on things like Christianity, which the series does pull some cues from for reference.

I'm not reconciling anything, I'm just saying that some of the games (namely WW, TP, and SS to a degree) all made a big fuss about the reincarnation stuff and the "hero's spirit".
