Raccoons was better than anything we've got now. Or anything we've got left, no Star, no Adventure Time, etc.

Raccoons was a decent show when it comes to teaching kids about real life issues and everyday problems. It was harmonic and funny where it needed to be, and sometimes it could get serious/depressing without being in your face preachy like, say, Captain Planet. Episodes like "the chips are down", "join the club" and "the one that got away" always stuck with me because of the impact they left hadling friends with addictions, peer pressure and permanent damage to your sanctuaries. Think back, it was a time where TV needed to prove it could deliver education properly. I'm kinda glad they ditched Ranger Dan and the kids later, they must've realized that you don't need human avatars.

The songs didn't feel out of place mostly, they're a product of their time (undiluted 80's) and add to the adventurous feeling you could get in a show like this. Even without nostalgia glasses you can appreciate it.

I had a single episode recorded on tape from the very small time my family had Disney Channel (due to its premium status). It was the one where Cyril doesn't want the forest to learn the truth of his grandfather's legacy (and tarnish his own image in the process). The weird tone and intentionally creepy parts (as things were meant to scare Bert) made me never quite sure if I liked the show or found it nightmarish.

If the show even managed to be creepy, then it looks like it succeeds on a variety of levels

There were DVDs but glorified Best Of sets, and ruined by the cold opens being cut out, and part of the end credits having Len Carlson as Bert talk over them.

Either it was created when Bert was a kid, which would mean that him and a guy twice his age used to camp out alone together in the forest, or it was made only recently which would mean that two grown ass men (one being in his late teens and the other his landlord) build a shitty little clubhouse out in the forest and told eachother ghost stories..

Wow man, wow. First, thank you so much for sharing these - they're incredible! So pristine, one could almost forgive their random selection. Evidently most of these are from the Lost Star, just a few from the series. Hopefuly the mouse spazzes were worth it.

This one has to be my favorite. The design of Cyril's fortress with the ancient temple front is phenomenal, and the iron gate (not seen here) with the Sneer emblem on it rounds it up.

No problem m8. The quality is very nice, I'll give them that. But just so fucking random. And random image sizes, even, I've done nothing to the files, they're exactly as they appear on the DVD.

Does make you wonder how fantastic they could make some old cartoons look if only they still had all the original cels to rescan. I found one more image in the folder I'd stuck these in, I don't think this one was off the DVD but it's nice anyhow.

I'm trying very hard not to be too judgemental of the reboot and no offense to the particular character designer working on it, they seem very enthusiastic about it all but I think I just have a general loathing of modern character designs in general.

The fact the exact same people are also working on a show called "Diversity League: Social Justice Division" which is going to be a piss-take of current SJW trends in media does however fill me with some hope that they're going to keep the sincerity of the original alive.

Once again I agree with your statement. Modern minimalism is used so often, it all merges to a technicolor slop. But everyone deserves at least one chance, if the writing is not Disney poisoned it might overcome the odds.

Anyway Cyril without the cigar end is like looking at a sundae with no cherry, something is missing to complete the image. Hopefully they also kept the pigs.

Looking at the new designs alongside the old ones, I don't think I'd be nearly so bothered if not for the mouths. Old cartoons used to at least try to give the illusion of depth so it seemed like their mouths were on the front of their faces, rather than just semi-circles slapped on one side.

I haven't seen the show in a while but from what I remember, Cyril's just a guy who is inherently selfish and his better nature, while still existant, is buried under decades of thinking along the lines of "you have to fuck other people before they fuck you". Rather than outright opposing the idealism of the other characters he just seems to see them as naive, though they do have the ability to occasionally awaken his latent empathy.

I think those things are what made him a god antagonist - He was still human (or aardvark) and looks at the world in the way a lot of people actually do, not just evil for the sake of it like a lot of kids' cartoon villains at the time. The protagonists tried to change his mind and get him on side not just fight him, which is the kind of message I think we're sorely lacking in media today. It would be nice to see that dynamic continue in the reboot.

Outstanding summary. Allow me to add that Cyril's also adopted and a self-made man. Everything he does is with devotion, albeit unfriendly. People in such circumstances may have the need to prove their worth and making their peers proud. I loved watching the show, then the Lost Star, then the other specials in reverse order. Cyril just gets more and more insane the farther back in time you go.

She's one of the only examples I can think of in a mainstream cartoon where the "popular elegant girl" is a good person and not a spoiled strawman.

It's a pretty bizarre pilot considering what the series is actually like. I wonder if it was a deliberate playing of the system by the creators, showing the network what they thought they'd greenlight (more action, more generic and simplistic good vs. evil conflict).

It came after "The Christmas Raccoons" and "The Raccoons On Ice," which are a lot more like the show. So they'd already established the style they would stick with.

In a way, that makes the Lost Star even more bizarre since it's such a huge deviation from the norm they'd already set.

I think after two decades I finally get why it was such a huge deviation. The plot had to revolve around a megalomaniacal Cyril who wants to invade and conquer earth, so in order to make it work they had to distance themselves from the Evergreen Forest scenario to a planetary scale. Additionally, the "real" Cyril was a wall street eco villain, but he couldn't compare to the Imperial Commander Cyril who willingly would invade, slaughter and leave the Raccoons to die in the base destruction. Are there other cartoons where the "villain" actually goes through a personality devolopment arc? That's one of the things I like most about the show, he didn't just stay "evil" as a character but was actually fleshed out.

They mostly did it by giving him much needed screentime, we don't just follow the hero Bert, but also in lengthy scenes see the life of Sneer, by which we see that he is not just that evil ruthless capitalist but for example inside a loving caring father with own problems, worries etc. who is just as vulnerable.
Then they did it by introducing new characters, his "partners" as villians which then were so ruthless that even Sneer could not stand for it and over time became mor open to the Raccoons and sometimes even taking their side. It's also shown that the Raccoons and Sneer don't really HATE each other and he seems to actually secretly enjoy fighting against them.

Yeah, I have no idea who decided to have the mouths separate, making them lack a muzzle, but it's my one issue too.

It especially doesn't make sense since it's Jessica Borutski who is doing the character designs, and she was the one who designed and developed the Bunnicula cartoon.

Ludo in Star VS the Forces of Evil. His arc was pretty good then the show went to shit.
