The death of Parker was a motivator for both Miles' and Gwen's heroics. Even in the movie Uncle Aaron's death wasn't the catalyst for Miles' desire to become Spider-man, that was fulfilling his promise to 1610 Peter. His Uncle's death helped provide a definition on what he wanted Spider-man to be.

And yes Miles' shtick has always been the man between. Not just with the obvious Civilian and Hero life, but with his transition from Public to boarding school, His bi-racial background, His father's shady past prompting them to give him his mother's last name to keep that stigma away, his age of being not quite a boy yet not a man, his straight arrow father and his shady uncle, and literally being born in 1610 but living currently in 616.

A lot has to change in movie 2 for Gwen to be attracted to Miles though. As things stand, he's pretty much her goofy younger brother; which is a very difficult thing to change in a way that isn't clumsy.

There are any number of coupling regarding the heroes in these comics and their respective romantic interest counterpart that are always situational and providential hinting towards fate or "meant to be". This is no different and could argubaly have more substance than other examples. Peter and MJ were no more than neighbors. Nothing about being neighbors means you naturally want to hook up. Gwen finds herself in a different dimension and sees something in Miles who tries to fulfill a promise he makes with a dying Spider-man. Both of their origin stories are tragic. There's enough there, that if Gwen isn't biased in some way, to hold onto and find appealing in Miles. That's all MJ or Gwen needed to fall in love with Peter.

It just felt like Miles is a substitute for Gwen since it's always Peter and MJ like all the time and not Peter and Gwen. That's were the problem is. If Miles should have a love interest then make one who is a Mary Jane-type for Miles with no connection and someone Miles can easily bond with on a pesonal level rather than a character with a connection. The situation is fantastical but that still doesn't betray the core of it's story, which is two people infatuated with each other being separated this time literally worlds apart. The rules establish in the logic of the movie are never compromised to allow the romance to happen. Bullet point 4 would be fine if the logic presented in the story allowed it to come to that conclusion.

You would have to break The universal Logic of Star Wars which has no concept of a Multiverse and the universal logic of the Simpsons where Stars Wars is a series of movies created by George Lucas and not real within their context, in order to make that happen. Gwen and Miles meeting breaks none of those established rules.

Now this is a legitimate criticism. But it seems the movie tries give an explanation for this through Gwen's resolving to isolate herself. The scene where she tries to convince Peter to ignore MJ while they infiltrated Fisk's building alluded to this. Gwen completely shut herself off; not even trying to connect with either Peter; Mile's Peter or the Peter from the other universe.

Gwen's resolving to isolate herself also gives explanation for this as in taking the long road to get home without trying to involve herself in the alt-universe spider-man's affairs. She only decides to get involved after seeing two other spider people like herself seeming working towards the same goal.
