It's trying to match the style of the comic. I'm not sure if designs meant for individual drawings will work well in animation but we'll see. It's much better than the majority of 90s and 00s redesigns that have been coming out lately at least.

I am almost entirely certain it has more to do with the head shape and posing than the color palette, and that's not even brown skin it's closer to pink
